Inclusion via nature 2022

– create new ways of organising sustainable public events – be accessible for as many people as possible – be a shared, unique and international guiding and scouting experience – guide its participants towards making sustainable choices.

Project: Youth worker mobility

Countries: Participants from European countries

The organisers of Kajo worked with partners to develop new ways to make large scouting events more sustainable. Ecological sustainability is not the only aspect of sustainability. Kajo was designed to be more sustainable than previous events also in social, economic and cultural terms. Lessons learned during the project were actively shared with others so they can be applied when planning future camps and other events. Responsibility and accountability have always been a part of scouting, but in scouting today it is practically a requirement. Scouts can be role models when it comes to organising a large-scale event in a responsible way. Responsible choices means those that help take everyone towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. It was important that everyone at Kajo developed an idea of what responsible choices are and why it is important to make them.

Project: International online youth exchange

Greener work in Villa Elba

Countries: Estonia, Finland, France, Greece and Iceland

Organisation: Allianssi Youth Exchange (Finland)

Project: Volunteering (ESC)

Description: “Plastic is not Fantastic” was an online youth exchange that took place in May and June 2021. The aim was to reflect on plastic consumption around the world and to come up with ideas and actions in order to reduce it. As participants were from different countries, they could compare different consumption and recycling practices but also discuss the level of awareness of this topic in their countries During the project they also discussed efficient means of communication in order to encourage people to act on environmental issues. They discovered that communication that triggers emotions (both positive and negative) leads people to want to take action. One day of the youth exchange was dedicated to activities for reducing plastic consumption: a street and beach clean-up, “plogging” (going out to exercise and picking up trash on the way), and a Do It Yourself activity.
