Main actors and organisations Erasmus by Train e.V. – LEMOCC partner Erasmus by Train is a European, student-led initiative founded in January 2020 and based in Germany. The initiative calls for free Erasmus+ train tickets for a more sustainable and united Europe. The EU’s Erasmus+ programme allows several hundreds of thousands of people to travel to other countries every year and gain valuable experience. Participants often fly, so the Erasmus+ programme thus contributes to high CO2 emissions. The initiative calls on the EU to provide free train tickets for Erasmus+ participants for travel to and from their exchange destination. Erasmus by Train raises awareness among Erasmus+ participants about sustain- able travel in Europe. The initiative supports Erasmus+ participants who want to travel by coach or train and also provides grants if the budget is available. Moreover, Erasmus by Train is lobbying the relevant authorities at university, regional, national and European level.

Deutsch-Polnisches Jugendwerk (DPJW) / German-Polish Youth Office (GPYO)

The German-Polish Youth Office (GPYO) was established in 1991 by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland. It is mainly funded through contri- butions from the two countries. Its main activity is to provide financial support for German-Polish and trilat - eral projects, including ecological projects or outdoor activities. GPYO also organises its own projects. German-Polish youth exchanges are as diverse as the interests of young people in both countries, so GPYO support is not tied to specific topics, types of events or pedagogical concepts. However, environmental protec- tion plays a major role.

Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt / German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU)

DBU is one of Europe’s largest foundations. It promotes and funds innovative, solution-oriented projects with the goal of protecting the environment. These projects either fall under the DBU’s 12 funding topics or receive “open-topic” project funding. Project proposals submitted by or together with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are given special consideration. In addition to projects in Germany, the DBU also provides limited funding to international projects, for the time being primarily projects in Central and (South) Eastern Europe. Funding for international projects outside of this region may be provided on a case-by-case basis. Further information: About DBU Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk (DFJW) / Franco-German Youth Office (FGYO) The FGYO is an international organisation for Fran- co-German cooperation. The founding of the FGYO goes back to the Franco-German friendship agreement (Elysée Treaty) of 1963. Its mission is to strengthen ties between German and French young people and to deepen their sense of mutual understanding. Since 1963, more than 9.5 million young people from France and Germany have participated in over 382,000 exchange programmes. The FGYO supports youth exchange and youth projects between Germany and France. Projects include student exchanges for secondary schools and universities, language courses, town twinning arrangements and regional partnerships, sports meetings, internships and exchanges in the field of career and seminar and research grants. For instance, under the call for projects “The planet in your hands” , a total of 19 projects are supported in 2022 that focus on the climate/environ- ment/sustainability nexus and have a Franco-German or multilateral dimension.
