Ask The Experts – Spring is Here!
By Jeff Atkinson Depending on where you call home, spring flowers may be popping up or your ground might still be frozen. In either case, the growing season is right around the corner and your lawn will soon wake up from its winter slumber. Ensuring your turf has the food – aka fertility – it needs and that undesirable grassy weeds are prevented from establishing are two steps you can take to set your lawn up to be the envy of your neighbors in the coming months. Keeping Your Grass Well-Fed Just like humans, turf needs adequate food to grow, develop, and thrive. This is especially true when turf wakes up from winter dormancy. A Harrell’s fertilizer blend including around 25% quick-release nitrogen combined with around 75% POLYON is a great option to get your turf off to a great start. Using Herbicides While proper nutrition is the foundation for a healthy lawn, limiting competition from weeds is a key strategy for maintaining a uniform, dense turf stand. This can be done with herbicides. Herbicides generally fall into two main groups, preemergence or postemergence. Preemergence herbicides control weeds before they establish while postemergence herbicides control weeds after establishment. Both types of herbicides are effective; however, generally, it is easier and requires fewer applications to control weeds before they can establish. Conveniently, many Harrell’s fertilizer blends are available, including a preemergence herbicide active ingredient sparged, or coated, on the fertilizer blend. This allows for a convenient and efficient way to provide turfgrass fertility and weed control in a single application. If you’re curious how you can level up your lawn this season, we are fortunate to be surrounded by a team of turfgrass experts to help solve any turfgrass-related issue you might face! Good luck this season keeping your lawn green and weed-free.
