A BRIEF HISTORY OF TALLOW
Tallow was a common & versatile staple in homes for centuries. Once used for cooking, skincare products, candle making, medicinal salves, & even used to lubricate machinery. There is a modern resurgence of fanfare over this ‘‘animal byproduct” & for good reason. It was during the mid 20th century industrial revolution & the mass production of (cheap) synthetic oils that tallow in skincare all but died out. I’ve wondered, why reinvent the wheel or ‘fix’ something that wasn’t broken to begin with? Mass manufactures of skincare products desensitized us from the intricate truth that “Nature provides everything we need”.
During the 1960s & 70s research began to emerge of the risk of consuming large amounts of saturated fats being linked to cardiovascular disease - all but demonizing tallow in the process. Everything in moderation, right? Recently, more studies are beginning to argue for further examination. The Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) is a beacon of insights into examining modern & ancestral cuisine & lifestyle choices. When it comes to our skin, the largest organ of the body, I value what products I use just as much as what I eat. I value regenerative practices that leave “no waste”.
NO TURNING BACK FROM TALLOW
This ‘‘golden elixir” of buttery goodness is full of vital nutrients like omega fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, & K - all of which have been shown to support skin health. The chemical structure of tallow closely mimics our skins oils (sebum), & is easily absorbed without clogging pores. In my early 20s I struggled with psoriasis like eczema. Knuckles cracked and bleeding, constantly itchy, and drier than the desert! No matter how much lotion I applied I couldn’t seem to find something that worked to support my sensitive skin.
From soft well hydrated skin, reducing dandruff & improving scalp health; eating deliciously oiled up potatoes and roasts; to treating wounds, reducing appearance of scars & stretch marks - I’m never turning back from tallow! Many butchers, grocery stores, and online shops carry tallow- I encourage you to get acquainted with this decadent tool.
Until tallow!

Lotion, body butter’s, & balms
Gather your supplies!
Materials needed for lotion, Balms, & body butters 1/4 cup tallow (organic/grass fed/ grass finished is preferred) 2 tablespoons of another carrier oil of choice (almond, grapeseed, avocado, and sunflower seed oil’s will be lighter - great for oil prone skin & jojoba, coconut, castor oil’s will be denser - great for dry skin/ night creams/’slugging’) 10 - 20 drops of essential oil of choice (experiment! Rosemary & Oregano both contain antibacterial properties, citronella can be added in small in small doses, has a wonderful smell & might prevent bugs from getting you! Proceed with precaution when using tea tree & lavender - recent studies show potential endocrine disruption when regularly using these oils. Do your research & a ‘‘patch test” before applying any new skincare product to the face/ body
cornstartch or arrowroot powder can be added to to reduce oiliness & even thicken the lotion’s consistency making it less likely to melt in warmer climates (1/2 teaspoon at a time till it reaches the desired consistency. Test as you add!)
Materials needed in the kitchen:
Double boiler or a pot (a small pot & glass measuring cup or bowl that glass or stainless steel will work as well) kitchen aid or hand mixer containers to put tallow body butter / salve
Instructions
Gather materials, sanitize containers for storage at the end as well as your workspace Get your double boiler or pot filled with water to a gentle boil as you measure the rest of your ingredient In a stainless steel bowl or the top portion of your double boiler 1. Roughly measure out Tallow (any excess can be poured back into its orginal container) 2. Melt Tallow 3. Remove from heat and add the two tablespoons of 2nd oil of your choosing as well as your essential oils! 4. Stir or combine using kitchenaid/ hand mixer for a few seconds 5. This is when you can decide whether you’d like a fluffy whipped body butter or more of a balm like consistency.
*For a balm like texture immediately pour into preferred containers and allow to cool completely *for a whipped body butter’s consistency allow the mixture to cool for 5-15 minutes in the fridge or freezer. You want the mixture to be the consistency of slightly softened butter. use your kitchen aid or hand mixer for 10-25minutes until all oils are combined & well whipped store in glass airtight container *adding arrow root or cornstarch can combat excessive oiliness & reduce likelihood of it melting. . Mix in 1/2teaspoon at a time until it reaches desired consistenc. TEST the batch as you go!
