at noon, will I pray” (Psa. 55:16, 17). APPROACH: Our story today-has an enticing name, “Down, by the Brook.” What does it make you think of? The time you went fishing with your father? The picnic with Aunt Mary?

should open upward. Write "J” near the top open end of the first, “A” on the second, “C” on the third, “0s” on the fourth, and “B” on the fifth. With the cards in the envelopes, Write, where the cards show through the slots, one of the following words ver tically on e a c h c a r d , “JÀCOB,” “FEAR,” “ESAU,” “FAITH,” a n d “ANGEL.” Using the word “JACOB” on the first card, writing on the envelope, complete the following words, “UN JUSTLY •PLANNED, DECEITFULLY STOLE BLESSING.” Using the word “FEAR” on the second card, write, “ UN F O R G O T T E N TR I CK E R Y AGAINST BROTHER.” On the next, using the word “ E SA U ” ■w r i t e “ FRARED RESULTS ESAU’S PUNISH MENT.” C o m p l e t e t h e words, “ OFFERED P R A Y ER IMPLORING THE ALMIGHTY” on the fourth, using the word “FAITH.” With the word “ANGEL” on: the fifth, finish, “BE CAME R E P E N T A N T , FORGIVEN, NAMED ISRAEL” ). LESSON: I hold in my hand five cards which tell us about an important person in history. The first gives his name, “JACOB.” The second tells of “ FEAR,” the third the name of his brother “ESAU,” the fourth, “ FAITH,” and the fifth, “ANGEL.” Are you won dering how these words fit into the life of Jacob? These envelopes hinged together give us the history of Jacob’s life. They appear to have only a jumble of parts, of words. Perhaps these cards, if placed in the envelopes, will give meaning to thé words. We place the first in. the; en velope with “J” on it and read, “UN JUSTLY PLANNED, DECEITFULLY STOLE BLESSING.” That is what Jacob did. With the second card in the envelope, we read, “UNFORGOTTEN trickery aga in st brother .” No wonder Jacob had fear. Next we read, “FEARED RESULT'S ESAU’S PUNISH MENT.” That is the reason he feared his brother. The fourth tells us that he “OFFERED PRAYER, IMPLORING THE ALMIGHTY.” That is a good thing to do when afraid. As we place the fifth card in its envelope, we read, “BECAME REPENTANT, FORGIVEN, NAMED ISRAEL.” This short history of Jacob’s life should remind us that those who turn to God in faith are. forgiven and changed. Importance of Early Decisions Horatius Bonar, the eminent Edin burgh hymn writer, once made an ex amination of 253 converts under his charge, with the following results: The number under twenty years of age was 138; between twenty and thirty, eighty-five; between thirty and forty, twenty-two; between forty and fifty, four; between fifty and sixty, three; between sixty and seventy, one; over seventy, not one.—Selected.

W a d i n g in' the shallow p l a c e s ? There are lots of pleasant memories that come to us w h e n we s a y , “ D o w n b y t lie Brook.” B u t o u r story isn’t about any of these. LESSON STORY:

Our story is about Jacob again—Jacob, the mart who had a strange and beau tiful dream. Do you remember? Today we find him having another strange experience. After being gone from home for a great many years, he was finally returning with his family and his possessions. As he neared; home, his thoughts were not all pleasant ones. He remembered that he had made an enemy of his brother Esau before he went away, and now he was almost afraid to meet his brother. A guilty conscience always makes us afraid. He sent his family and his flocks on over across the brook, and he re mained behind. There, in the night hours, one who seemed to be a man wrestled with him. Jacob said, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.” And the man, who was really God dealing with Jacob, did bless him, and He gave Jacob a new name, Israel, which means “Prince with God.” Would you like to be a “Prince with God” ? You can be, if you yield Jto Him, as Jacob finally did, and receive a new nature. To those who have this new nature, the Lord Jesus says, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do” (John 14:13). Shall we sing, “Take the name pf Jesus with you” ?
