1. Let us be fair. War is a breeder of hate, prejudice, and suspicion. Therefore many are open to the insidious propaganda that the Jews are a menace. Christians must realize that Jews are fellow hu man beings (Acts 17:26) who like our selves are descendants of Adam and therefore mixtures of good and bad, all of us having sinned and needing salvation (Rom. 3:9, 23). We need to beware of judging a whole people ad versely because of an unhappy experi ence with one or a few -of its mem bers. In order to get a balanced per spective, it is well to remember, when we meet a bad Jew, all the bad Gen tiles we know! 2. Let us be appreciative: ; a. For spiritual blessings received through Jewish channels. We Gentiles are indebted to the Jews through God for all our knowledge of God. Our Bible was written by Jewish prophets inspired by the Holy Spirit. The dis ciples were all Jews. The first Christ tian m a r t y r s were Jews. Paul, the great missionary to the Gentiles, was a Jew. Our1Lord .and Saviour was ac cording to the flesh a Jew (Matt. 1:1 and Heb. 2:16).' b. For material a n d cultural blessings received through Jewish channels. Can you name some of the Jewish contributors to the fields of medicine, science, law, literature, and music? II. HOW CAN WE BEST REPRESENT CHRIST TO REFUGEES? Matthew 25:34-40 reveals that Christ expects us to be concerned with the physical and mental needs of others and that in ministering to them we are actually ministering to Him. If we confine ourselves to preaching Christ merely with the lips to these troubled, bewildered f o l k who have come through terrifying, heart-rending ex periences and fail to be interested in their personal problems, we shall fail to win them to Christ. Consider some of the hardships' they experi ence: 1. Heartache over separation from friends- and loved ones. 2. Bewilderment due to strange cus toms and language. 3. Difficulty in obtaining employ ment. For the Leader Find out whether there are any refugees of any race or nation in your community and in your schools. Check up on what your members as indi viduals or as a group are doing to enable these refugees to become ad justed to American life and to win them to Christ. Discuss means of further helping them.

Both individually and collectively, the members can do a great work for the Lord in their particular locality and at the same time can cooperate in a spirit of genuine Christian love with every other group which is doing likewise. And when all of us quit “playing church” and get so deadly in earnest, about the task God has given us that we shall direct every energy in carrying it out, we shall find that the Holy Spirit will bless our lives with fruit and with fellowship among others of God’s children. AUGUST 16, 1942 REFUGEES IN OUR MIDST; M a t t h e w 25:31-40; H e b r e w s 13:1-3 By Charlotte E. Rasmussen Introduction After World War I, over 4,000,000 people became refugees because polit ical conditions made life impossible in their homeland. Before the out* break' of this second world war, un counted thousands in Spain, Italy, and Germany became refugees. Because of Hitler’s Nuremberg laws, millions of Jews, first in Germany and then in those countries w h i c h were sub jected to Germany, became objects of bitter and revolting persecution. Thou sands of them were thrust from their homelands into a world unprepared to receive them. This condition has cre ated a tremendous problem which we as Christians cannot ignore. Not only Jews have been uprooted by the storm of war. British subjects, some of them comparatively easily absorbed, have come to our shores in recent years and months. There are also in our midst many liberty-loving Dutch, Bel gians, F r e n c h , and Chinese—even Germans and Italians unsympathetic with the dictatorships—who are fac ing seemingly insurmountable diffi culties. While we must never forget (that our greatest service to others is that of bringing them to a s a v i n g knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ who alone can meet the deepest needs of every life, we must remember that He is concerned with the problems of the whole man—body, soul, and spirit —so that we must not ignore the so cial and economic needs of others on the plea that it is impossible during the present age to abolish social in justice. While we must not overlook the Gentile, refugees in our midst, it might be most profitable in v i e w of the g r o w i n g anti-Semitic agitation in America to consider primarily the Jewish angle of the refugee problem. For Those Who Have Topics I. WHAT SHOULD OUR ATTITUDE TOWARD THE JEWS ®E?
