. AUGUST 23, 1942 “ BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS” (A Union Vesper Service) A cts 20:28-38 By Cyrus N. Nelson Introduction The Bible is always up to the min ute. As the latest radio flash, Paul says, “Be on the alertN (Weymouth translation, Acts 28:31). Satan is ever marshaling his forces to destroy the power and witness of Christian fellow ship. He is trying to sow the seed of division and appropriation, even as the dictators are doing in military tactics. “Separate and appropriate,’’ is their cry. “Blest be the tie that binds,” we sing. “Accursed be the.tie that binds!” Satan cries. He is try ing to make ineffective our testimony as a group, and thus Paul warns, “Be on the alert!” (Study Acts 20:28-31.) For Those Who Have Topics I! CHRISTIAN F E L L OW S H I P IS FOUNDED ON REGENERATION. 1. Regeneration is essential to sal vation (Acts 20:28—last' part; Rom. 3:24, 25; Col. 1:14; Joh,n 3:3, 5, 6; Titus 2:14). Fellowship begins at the cross of Christ where we are/ born into the family of God. We are bought with His own blood. i- *’ 2. Regeneration produces Christian character (2 Cor. 5:17; 2:14; Gal. 5:19- 26; Eph. 4:24). The new birth marks the glorious beginning of our spiritual life in Christ, from which point we go to an equally glorious future through demonstration in Christian character. “Christ in me” is the secret. II. CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP MUST BE NURTURED. 1. Individually — “ unto yourselves” ' (Acts 20:28, 32; Job 23:12; Psa. 119>103; 1 Pet. 2:2). As individuals we must be spiritually minded; we must know how to pray and witness and study the Word. If your society, is lacking here, let two or three get apart.and pray much for the Spirit’s conviction. 2. Corporately — “ church of Gocl” (Acts 20:28; Ezek. 33:6; Matt. 25:14- 30). Christian fellowship must be nur tured as a group, too. Some societies are marked by cliques due to thought lessness and laziness. It takes thought and work to create a society spirit that attracts other young people. Paul speaks to us, “Take heed . . . to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers [should we say ‘officers’ ?], to feed . . .” This means also to tend. Are ypu a re sponsible officer and member before the Lord? III. CHR I S T I A ’ n FELLOWSHIP IS * UNSELFISH.

Beautiful Volumes. There is nothing like it!

1. Socially it is no respecter of per sons (Acts 20:35; Mk. 1?:37; Matt. 11:29; Phil. 2:8). We are all one in Christ. The church had its beginning with the common people. Of Christ it is said, “The common people heard him gladly.” Some societies (some times certain members within a so ciety) like to assume a select and su perior attitude as if they were just a little better than others. Henry Ward Beecher once said, “A select church is a dead church.” This truth applies to your society. 2. Financially it gives generously (Acts 20:35; 2 Cor. 9:7; Lk. 21:1-4). Can we withhold from our Lord? IV. CHR I S T I A N FELLOWSHIP BRINGS GREAT GLORY TO GOD. 1. It shows the place and power of the true church of God (Acts 20:28; Matt. 18:20; 1 Cor. 1:9; Acts 2:42; John 17:21). “Blest Be the Tie That Rinds.” The Christian groups over which this can be written are the best arguments for the power of God. We do not need numbers, but we need a great Saviour in our midst. “I will .draw all men unto me” (John 12:32). 2. It stimulates soul-winning (Matt. 4:19; Prov. 11:30; Dan. 12:3; Acts 2:41, 47; 4:4; 5:14; 11:21). A live Christian fellowship climaxes in soul winning. This was certainly our Lord’s plan. Of His ministry He said, “The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Lk. 19:10).
