a ¿lassie example of .this do we find in the story of Christ’s healing the ten lepers—only one returned to offer his thanks! , . . Ask yourself the question: Would T be numbered with!.the nine ungrateful lepers or would I be the-, one thankful one?—Milo F. Jamison. 13. The Purpose oi Power - “When the burnt offering began, the song of the Lord began also” (2 Chron. 29:27). The challenge of the New Testa ment message lies in its emphasis bn sacrificial service. -Holiness of life, victory over temptation, growth in grace—these are not ends in them selves, to be sought for the happiness they bring or the credit they win be fore other Christians. No, the promise of the Spirit of God is for those who Will use these gifts, in service for the Master. ‘‘Ye shall, receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you . . . and ye shall be my witnesses.” —Hugh A. Evan Hopkins. 14. Strength for Weakness “And he said unto me. My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most glad ly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities . . (2 Cor. 12:9). A pillow of stones on' a lonely hill, A bush in a' desert bleak, A cloud the size of a prophet’s hand, A captive maid in a Syrian land, A mustard seed, or a grain of sand— When the Father wishes to Speak— Have voices whose echoes are ringing Still. The poorest of vessels perform His will. For His glory He chooses the meek, And the things men despise Seem the pride of His eyes As He perfects His strength through the weak. —J. S. Fisher. 15. What Pleases God? “Withput faith it is impossible to please him” (Heb. 11:6). “Whatsoever things are pure . . . lovely . . . of good report,” try to gain them; but remember that all these things put together, without faith, do not please God. Virtues, with out faith, are white-washed sins. Un belief nullifies everything. . . . Faith was Peter’s life buoy—it kept him up; but unbelief sent him down. The Christian’s life may be said to be al ways “walking on the water,” and every wave would swallow him up; but faith enables him to stand. The moment you cease to believe, that moment distress and failure follow. Oh, wherefore then dost thou doubt? —Selected. 16. Love on the Alert “Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold

II wrought, controlled, and guided by the Spirit, How truly great will yet the harvest be! “Not in vain”—devout and faithful follower,.* The quiet witness which thy life .doth bear; : Nor yet in vain the message o f the radiance Which those abiding in Him ever wean —J. Danson Smith. 9. ;' " ‘ Humility “He giVeth more grace . . . grace unto the humble” (Jas. 4:6). Full consécration begets humility. This is a robe which imparts to the wearer a true sense of personal un worthiness,; leading such to esteem others better than themselves, and it forever destroys the desire for rank, or fame, and all high-mindedness. . .... : The spikenard will shed abroad its fragrance, and the devoted disciple, like his -Master, cannot be hid. He need not therefore proclaim himself. —George Ç. Needham.. 10. Combatting PressureandWeakness "^Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Lk. 18:1). A missionary writes: “My concord* ance shows that the root "meaning of thé word ‘faint’ is to ‘cave in.’ What causes a ‘cave in’? It is weakness on the one hand, and pressure on the other. What causés a ‘cave in’ in our prayer life? Is it not’ often pressure either from things of secondary im portance, or else from the powers of darkness?” ' Are we holding on in prayer, persisting in prayer, at all seasons, whether we “ feel led to” or not?— China's Millions. 11. BeadyI “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, ex cept it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me” (John 15:4). Believer, wouldst thou truly and fully abide in Christ? Prepare thyself to part forever from self, and not to allow it, even for a single moment, to have aught to say in thy inner life. If thou art willing to come entirely away out of self, and to allow Jesus Christ to become thy life within thee, inspiring all thy thinking, feeling, acting^in things temporal and spirit ual, He is ready to undertake the charge. How ready art-thou? —Andrew Murray. Am i the "One"? “Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Psa. 106:1). On all ’occasions and in all occupa tions it is profitable to praise the Lord. . v . There is no sin more common or more offensive than ingratitude. What 12.
