28. Hidden in the Secret Place “Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues” (Psa. 31:20). The thoughtless word, thè unkind criticism, and cruel fault-finding! Who has not suffered from the tongue wound? Have we learned that there is a place—a secret place—where we may hide, and where the wound ceases to hurt? , . . It is not easy for an injured person to turn aside and hide himself in this secret place. His instinct is to retaliate; and thus we read, "Thou shalt keep them.” His restraining presence keeps the heart calm and the tongue quiet in the hour of provocation.—H. W. Mallis. 29. The Voice of Stillness “Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord” (Zech. 2:13). My soul, be not afraid of God’s silence! It is another form of His voice. God’s silence is more than man’s speech, God’s negative is better than the world’s affirmation. Have thy prayers been followed only by a calm stillness? Well, and is not that God’s voice, a voice that will suffice thee in the meantime till the full dis closure come? Wait for Him in the silence, and ere long it shall become vocal!—Qeorga Matheson. 30. Abhorring Sin “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts” (Psa. 13?:23). How many men and women of abil ity there are in the church of whom we expect great things, but who al ways disappoint us! What is the mat ter? Sin! Oh, if you would have a mighty work of God in your own soul, ask God to search your heart, and if He shows you some sin, give it up. No matter if it is like tearing out your heartstrings, out with it! It hinders a mighty work of God in your soul. —R. A. Torrey. 31. Living in the Heavenlies “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Col. 3:1). It is easier for a consecrated Chris tian to live an out and out life for God than for any believer to live a mixed life. A soul redeemed and sanctified by Christ is too large for the shoals and sands of a selfish, worldly, sinful life. . . . Beloved, your life is too large, too glorious, too divine for that small place that you are trying to live in. Your purpose is too petty; arise and dwell on high in the resurrection life of Jesus, and the inspiring hope of His blessed coming. —A. B. Simpson.

ship the Lord our God and Father? —Things New and Old. 24. Love and Obedience “Every word of God is pure” (Prov. 30:5). The most intimate knowledge of God is possible pn one condition—that we search His holy Scriptures prayer fully and habitually, and translate what, we there find into obedience. Of him who thus meditates on God’s law day and night, who looks and con tinues looking into this perfect law of liberty, the promise ,is unique, and founcf in both Testanlents: “Whatso ever he doeth shall prosper” ; “this man shall be blessed in his deed.” —A. T. Pierson. 25. Scatter the Seed Now “Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters” (Isa. 32:20). Go on sowing! Though yet no life appears, The seed is incorruptible; ’Tis working through the years. Go on sowing! Thou may’st not reaper.be, Yet with the reaper shall rejoice Throughout eternity. —Leslie Wright. 26. Apply It “For the word of God is quick, and powerful” (Heb. 4:12). A, soap manufacturer who was not a Christian was walking with a minis ter. Said the soap-maker, “The gospel you preach hasn’t done much good, for there’s still a lot of wickedness and wicked people.” The preacher mad% no immediate reply, but they soon passed a child making mud pies. He was exceedingly dirty. The preacher said: “Soap hasn’t done much good in the. world, I see; for there’s still much dirt and many dirty people.” “Oh, well,” answered the manufac turer, “ soap is useful only when it’s applied.” ^ . “Exactly,” was the minister’s reply; ‘,‘so it is with the gospel we proclaim.” —W. J. Hart. 27. Rank Weeds “Lay apart all filthiness. . . . and receive with meekness the engrafted word, Which is able to save your souls” (Jas. 1:21). The true meaning of this exhorta tion is: “Rid yourself of the vile and evil influences which prevail around you”—and what a word 'this is for believers in our day and age! Apart from the “engrafted word,” deliver ance from the things of the world is impossible. The Word saves us. The Word searches us. The Word sanctifies us. The Word is a plant of excellent virtue, but it will not grow in a soul filled with rank weeds. , —Keith L. Brooks.
