A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Year 12 students have been busy this week. On Monday, we had the parents and carers of the Year 12 French students on site, as pupils are due to go on the Paris trip next week. Ms Summers and Mr Bharadia went through the details of the upcoming trip and all relevant details have also been sent out. On Tuesday evening Year 12 Drama students watched a performance at the Rose Theatre, which I am certain, they all enjoyed. On Thursday our Year 12 French students spent the day at the BFI taking part in a range of activities, which allowed them to challenge and grow their vocabulary skills while discussing a range of films from across the exam boards. Last week some of our linguisitcs students took part in the MFL Scoop competition, which was a great success. Over 100 A level linguists from 10 schools across Surrey competed in 20 mixed teams, each preparing a front page of a newspaper in German / French / Spanish. They had to include breaking news, which was being shown at random times, try and sell advertising space to foreign companies, produce an endorsement poster, as well as a 30-second promotional video. They also had to present their front page to the judges. Matthew D won an individual award for excellent negotiation skills for the advertising space in their newspaper, while Zoe G, Lyla M and Sarah K’s team came 2nd out of 20 teams. Well done to all our students who took part and a huge thank you to Ms Robinson for organising this trip for them. Next week, between Thursday and Sunday, all Year 12 French students will be spending 4 days in Paris. During their upcoming trip, they will be visiting a number of museums and sites, trying some French food, as well as practicing their oral skills with the locals. I am certain that they will all find the trip extremely interesting and beneficial, as well as memorable. Finally, Year 12 Philosophy students will be attending the Candle Conference, “Evil & the God of Love” will take place next FRiday and I’m sure will be an very interesting event.

Have a lovely week!

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen “When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily as if they tip-toed into the world when we were all looking the other way.” Through the eyes of nine-year-old Ade, we see a dystopian London be infiltrated by the “Bluchers”, menacing plants, dissolving all buildings in sight. Ade’s stabil- ity is at risk, and with a mother to care for and no chance of escape, he’s all on his own. Its unique exploration of themes such as depression, sacrifice, bravery and death make this book, despite it being a science fiction, radiate reality. Ade’s perspective of his story is handled with maturity and care, reflecting his role as a young carer that could easily place him as one of the thousands in our world. At a time of world conflicts infiltrating our lives, the ‘Boy in the Tower’ makes readers believe in true, beautiful human kindness through the relationships Ade builds throughout the novel. This book is for anyone who needs a pick me up, and is an incredibly accessible read for all! - Aisha Y, Year 12
