Investing in local and Indigenous-owned businesses SaskEnergy works with a variety of private sector companies for the procurement of goods and services, to complement our internal resources, and to provide expertise on industry leading practices with respect to the operation of our natural gas system. Our procurement processes align with the Government of Saskatchewan’s Crown Sector Priorities and the Saskatchewan Growth Plan.
One of the ways we support the province’s economy is through the execution of purchasing contracts with local businesses, including Indigenous-owned businesses, for natural gas infrastructure or labour. In 2023-24, 65 per cent of our procurement spend stayed in Saskatchewan, totalling $258 million.
In addition to SaskEnergy’s Indigenous Owned Business Master Service Agreement (MSA), which was implemented last year, we continue to seek opportunities to enhance and promote Indigenous inclusion within our construction projects. In 2023-24, we held project engagement sessions with vendors and Indigenous communities to build relationships and partnerships within the bidding community. SaskEnergy also developed an Indigenous procurement training guide to assist Indigenous businesses with building competitive proposals when we solicit bids for goods and services. With solar installations at our offices and facilities playing an important role in our efforts to bring more renewable electricity into our operations, SaskEnergy collaborated with the First Nations Power Authority to compile a list of eligible Indigenous-owned companies, which were then invited to participate in a closed competition to complete these projects over the next several years. The value of SaskEnergy’s contracts awarded to businesses with Indigenous ownership, as well as Indigenous content provided by non-Indigenous-owned businesses, was $31.7 million in 2023-24, up from $16.3 million in 2022-23.
SaskEnergy Network Member program and collaboration with industry Since 1998, we have engaged independent plumbing, heating and appliance companies throughout the province through our SaskEnergy Network Member program, which supports customers with programs and services such as natural gas appliance upgrades, furnace maintenance and carbon monoxide safety. Member companies offer customers Network services such as the Network Home Heating Tune-Up, access to Network financing, and access to the latest information regarding SaskEnergy’s energy efficiency programs and rebates. Network Members are also provided with opportunities to participate in our natural gas technology projects. There are 247 SaskEnergy Network Members in 64 communities throughout Saskatchewan.
SaskEnergy also meets for industry dialogue, twice per year, which is made up of members of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan, the Natural Gas Appliance and Equipment Dealers Association, and independent contractors. As the voice of industry, collaboration with dialogue members plays a key role in identifying ways to continually improve service to our mutual customers.
