Moving forward with our Indigenous engagement roadmap In 2023-24, we completed our Indigenous engagement roadmap, which provides a strategy and action plan for the implementation of our revised Indigenous policy and advances SaskEnergy’s contributions to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. As part of the development of the roadmap, which involved engagement with teams throughout SaskEnergy, more than 80 existing actions were identified for how the company supports Indigenous engagement, and nearly as many actions for further Indigenous engagement efforts were identified for implementation in the coming years. Engaging landowners and the public When we are planning our major gas line construction projects, it’s important that we talk to the people who know the land best. We engage with landowners through various means, including newspaper ads, direct mail-outs, in-person meetings and open house events, which provide them the opportunity to talk to members of our project teams. SaskEnergy also informs landowners and other stakeholders through fact sheets, brochures, and website material, and we make sure the public knows how to contact us for more information. In 2023-24, we held three open house events for large projects that support industry growth in the Prud’homme and Lanigan areas, including SaskPower’s 370-megawatt natural gas Aspen power station, which — once complete — will provide enough power for about 370,000 homes in Saskatchewan. Factors for holding open houses include project location, potential impacts, number of affected stakeholders and Indigenous communities, size or type of project, and land requirements. Invitations to open houses are sent to potentially affected communities and groups. However, any interested parties are welcome to attend.

We also regularly engage with landowners, communities, rural municipalities, and emergency responders for small gas line integrity projects, and when gas line inspections are conducted. In addition to these activities, we met with residents and building owners in the vicinity of our Many Islands Pipe Lines (Canada) Limited gas lines during 2023-24 to share and discuss the location of the gas lines, as well as important safety information. After public information is provided, or visitations are completed, we send out questionnaires asking for feedback. SaskEnergy employees also participate in trades shows where they provide attendees with information on gas line safety, working safely around gas lines, and our service and rebates, as well as answer questions about regulations, requirements, and the differences between our distribution and transmission systems.
