Supporting safety through dialogue, learning and information sharing In 2023-24, SaskEnergy conducted a safety culture survey with our employees to provide insights into habits and beliefs surrounding safety. The results from this survey, along with discussions with our field staff as part of our grassroots approach to safety, are integral to forming the future direction of safety at SaskEnergy. Moving forward, we will also adopt Human and Organizational Performance principles into our approach to safety. Together, these insights and principles will set the stage for further improvements to our safety culture. Recognizing that maintaining a strong culture of safety involves continuous improvement, management with field staff responsibilities engage with employees at field work locations to focus on safe work practices. Meeting with field staff where they work, on job sites, is an important management practice and a leading indicator for safety. Being present allows for the observation and reinforcement of safe work practices, and provides the opportunity for coaching in instances where there are safer ways to perform work. In addition, it allows for discussions to identify gaps and areas of improvement for our construction operations and maintenance practices. While safety is the focus of these visits, the time spent with employees allows for more active management and open communication. During 2023-24, management in our Construction team completed a total of 554 work site visits, or 50 per superintendent, which met the target of 50. Management in our Operations team invested 45 per cent of their time in the field, surpassing the target of 40 per cent.

Part of our safety culture, and keeping safety top of mind, includes encouraging our employees to submit any safety hazards, near-miss incidents, or safety observations such that learnings can be shared and any required corrective actions can be implemented. SaskEnergy continues to grow our reporting in this area with nearly 3,100 reports provided by staff during 2023-24. Through the identification of hazards, potential hazards, near-misses, and observations, we are better able to mitigate safety concerns and give everyone the opportunity to contribute to a safer workplace. At SaskEnergy, one week each year is designated as Safety Stand Up across the organization. This week gives employees the opportunity to “stand up for safety” as they come together to talk about important health and safety issues with senior management. Members of our Executive team attend the sessions at offices and facilities throughout the province and, together with senior leaders, lead safety-focused discussions with staff. Topics such as corporate safety results are covered, and the sessions include time for breakout groups in which employees can discuss and recommend safety topics and ideas, and present their thoughts to their peers and to senior management. The theme for this year’s Safety Stand Up was “Safety in a Minute”, which focused on the simple and easy things that each of us can do — in about a minute — to keep ourselves, our co-workers, our families and the public safe. Often, thoughts of safety consist of long checklists, lengthy training, and items that take considerable time and preparation to complete. While some activities do require this rigorous approach, there are many things that can be completed in about a minute to increase safety. Prior to the Safety Stand Up sessions taking place, employees were invited to take a picture, or shoot a video clip, demonstrating what they can do, in a minute, to stay safe. All submissions were compiled in a video that was shown during the sessions.

“Vehicle circle checks take a minute or less, prevent accidents, and give you a chance to check for vehicle damage and operation. Most importantly, they keep the public and us safe to get home to our families.” – Amanda Baldwin Operations Technician, Maidstone
