Looking Ahead As we continue to meet Saskatchewan’s energy needs, SaskEnergy will maintain a focus on balancing our emissions reduction efforts with our ability to provide affordable energy to our customers. The demand for natural gas in the province is significant, with consumption increasing rapidly in recent years. Natural gas currently accounts for roughly half of Saskatchewan’s primary energy demand and scenarios from the Canada Energy Regulator expect this to remain steady out to 2050. Driving this demand is the reliability and affordability of natural gas compared to other sources of energy, particularly among the industrial base as natural gas takes on a larger role in the province’s power generation mix. In addition, Saskatchewan’s cold climate necessitates significant energy usage for heating purposes during the winter months. Recognizing the critical role that we play in providing the province’s residents, businesses and industries with the energy they need, the ability to serve our customers with affordable energy is one of SaskEnergy’s strategic imperatives. The rapid rise in inflation experienced over the last few years has raised concern for consumers and puts pressure on businesses to attempt to hold the line on passing
along cost increases. For SaskEnergy, it is important that we continue to provide customers with access to low-cost energy sources, stable commodity rates, and delivery charges that are among the lowest in Canada. To be successful, we will maintain our focus on financial stewardship and identify further operational efficiencies to reduce costs.
Environmental responsibility is also important to us, and we remain committed to reducing our emissions from operations and to assisting our customers in reducing their energy consumption, costs and end-use emissions. SaskEnergy will continue to enhance our energy efficiency programs and rebates for customers while supporting and monitoring developments in emissions reduction technology that could further support our customers. In addition to balancing our operational emissions reduction plans with affordability, the evolving regulatory landscape will continue to influence our emissions reduction priorities and projects. Reliability, safety, and making it easier for our customers to do business with us also remain important focus areas as we look ahead. Part of this includes exploring opportunities to utilize our system and expertise to provide additional energy solutions — such as renewable natural gas — to our customers. As we work toward achieving our vision of providing critical energy to support a prosperous Saskatchewan, SaskEnergy will progress on our emissions reduction goals, support economic prosperity, invest in our workforce to meet the province’s energy needs now and into the future, and operate in the best interests of the public we serve.
