vice.” She has been for almost two years pastor’s assistant with R ev . R. V- J o h n son , ’23, of the Methodist Church South, Phoenix, Arizona. From a recent letter to. the president of the Alumni Associa tion it would appear that she is happily busy along many different lines of church work. She mentions that Mr. Johnson has been laid aside with illness for some two months but is rapidly recovering. —o— REV. EDWARD DUERKSEN, ’23, is now engaged as an itinerant missionary serving three churches in and near Alsen, North Dakota. Besides two or three ser vices on the Lord’s Day he cares for Bible classes during the week; one on Tuesday evening for church members and others; a second on Wednesday evening, a Bible class for candidates for Baptism; on Thursday evening general prayer meeting and Bible study; and on Friday evening a meeting for the children. —o— J. WINTERSGILL, recently Complet ing the Correspondence Course on “Fun damental Doctrines of Christianity” writes: “With no High School educa tion I have found this training of the ut most value to me as Superintendent of a Sunday School here in Edmonton, and in tend, God willing, to not only finish this Course of Study, but to study other courses, as spare time permits, and recom mend your school to all Sunday School workers with whom I come in contact.” " o— “Inland South America” under date of January 15th, 1927, carries an interesting report from E rnest D ie m , ’21, of the Brazil field. Evidently very earnest work is being done by Mr. and Mrs. Diem in this needy field and the Lord is blessing

the effort. He writes of the conversion of four through personal work. The num ber is not great but these present real Christian victories. —o— MR. JOHN C. WILLIAMS, Home Di rector of the North East India General Mission, Inc., was a guest of the Bible In stitute Hotel January 17 to 27th. Mr. Williams was spending some time in Southern California in the interests of the Mission, and in Spiritual Life Confer ences. He was a welcome visitor, and we pray God’s blessing upon him and the Mission he represents, —o— Through a letter addressed to the Alumni Association from M rs . S. M. R u s h , Fort Scott, Kansas, belated word has come of the accidental death of Mr. Rush last May. In the providence of God, he was fatally injured by a rock crusher. Mrs. Rush is carrying on the work left unfinished. She asks our pray ers, and w;e assure her of both sympathy and prayer. Serving and Waiting B y M ollie W. A nderson Is it hard, child, to wait by the side of the road, You who yearn to be out in the throng On the highway of life, where the busy ones are, The fearless, the brave and the strong? Is it hard to rejoice, when the others attain, And the laurels of them are bestowed, While, too feeble to run, and aweary with pain, You must wait by the side of the road? Do you fancy the battle of life could be fought, And its victories won by the throng, That its splendid achievements could ever be wrought If it were not for you and your song? Is it hard, then, to wait by the side of the road While the busy ones press toward the goal? To bid them good cheer, and to lighten each load By that sympathy sweet to the soul? Is it hard, then, this being a blessing to man, And pointing his pathway above, When you know you’re a part of God’s infinite plan, A link in the chain of His love? Be glad in your heart for your humble abode, And your mission-of peace in the strife. Be glad, then, to wait by the side of the road, As a spring, on the highway of life.

Mt. Lebanon, Syria, that she and Grace Ogg, who went to the field last fall, are well and very happy in their work. God is blessing them with many opportunities and already good fruit is being borne. — o — REV. E. C. DEWEY, ’24, mentions in a recent letter to Dr. Atkinson the progress of his work in Canton, New York. “Again and again during the past week there have come to me the words which you spoke at one time from the platform in the class in Evangelism. I cannot quote them exactly but they were to the effect that when people begin to come to their pastor requesting prayer for unsaved and backslidden loved ones it is time to pre pare for a revival. During the past week wives have been coming to me with tears in their eyes asking prayer for their hus bands. We praise God that He is answer ing prayer.” Speaking of life at B. I. Mr. Dewey writes: “Mrs. Dewey (Mildred Nichols ’20) and myself rejoice with you in the continued progress of the school.” REV. CHOATE N. BALCH, T9, of the First Christian Church, Lewiston, Idaho writes: “We are exhorted, ‘Covet earnest ly the best gifts’—and we do. We covet the combined wisdom of the Institute’s re nowned faculty, Mr. John Hunter’s rare sense of humor, the generosity exhibited by the donors who made B. I. a possibil ity, an opportunity to sit under Dr. John Maclnnis and the continued assurance of the prayers of our friends. We are thank ful for praying friends though the rest be denied us for the present.” — o — AVA McSPADDEN, ’22, bears this tes timony, “God truly has answered my pray ers for 1927, for I asked Him to let this be the busiest year of my life in His ser

Prayer R equests MARGARET ELLIOTT, ’26, writes from Wheaton, “I am enjoying college here very much and the Lord is blessing me richly this year. Pray that the Lord may continue to bless me and make me a blessing.”| ^ f f ^ t ^ :^ | | ! ELISABETH M. GOERZEN, T9, Hsingtao, Shantung, China. “My heart overflows with praise and thanksgiving to Him who gave Himself for us. He has abundantly compensated me for what little I have had to sacrifice in order to serve Him here. He has blessed me in my language study so that I still thrill with the wonder of it, for when I speak Chinese I find I am actually under stood. . . . Please pray that God will give me a truly consecrated, humble, Spirit-filled Bible woman. Also pray that the militarists and bandits may not hinder my work.” — o — Pray for REV. STANLEY H. THORPE, ’20, and the church to which he ministers, that the Lord may guide and bless. Mr. Thorpe is now pastor of The Tabernacle Church, Toronto, Ontario. —o—•— LEONA THOERING, ’20, Suifu, Szechwan, China. “Please pray for us that wisdom may be given during this time of unrest. The Chinese Christians also need to be upheld by prayer. The anti- foreign feeling is still strong in our province but His hand is not shortened that it cannot save.”
