Raj, Brigand Chief, a True Record. By Amy Carmichael, author of .“Things as They are,”; etc. ,A true story of adventure,, outlawry, persecution and endurance cen tering around Raj, a young athlete of Southern India, welj-born and prosper ous, who, though innocent of crime, fell into - the hands of the native police. Hounded into highway robbery, he was recaptured, deceived and tortured; lived a daring but lawless life of generosity to the poor and robbery of the rich; was converted to Christianity and suffered a tragic death. The intangible mystery and allurement) of the Far East mark the story from beginning to end. Almost in credible in spite of its truth, the record is thrilling in every incident and in every sense of thè word. (Revell) $2.50 T.C.H. —o— Christ’s Last Message to His Church, an exposition of the seven letters of Rev elation, chapters 1 to 3, by William Evans, Ph.D., D.D. These illuminating and inspiring chapters form another proof that the Bible is always able to meet the spiritual needs of the Church of Christ, and that these needs today are much like those of the first century'. Here is helpful sermonic material for ministers, valuable illustrative material for Chris tian workers, and invigorating spiritual material for every human soul. Dr. Evans says, in his “Foreword” :■ ‘‘The study of these letters written to the churches of the first century has made one great out standing impression on my mind ; namely, that the Bible is always up to date in its ability to supply the spiritual needs of the church. The Bible is true to God and true to man.” (Revell) $1.75 T.C.H. —o— Monkeys and Myths by S. E. Busser. This book, which undertakes to discuss many of the questions that group about Evolution, is well written, interesting from start to finish, contains a great many very much worth while things and yet is marred by a certain attitude which he takes towards the Scriptures, which is neither essential to the arguments pre sented in the book nor yet in any way an asset to the position which the author takes. No man who has seriously faced the Bible can afford to talk of it as though it were full of myths and tradi tions. If the author could have separated many of the good things he has to say from this attitude he would be of real help to some people who are trying to think their way through the maze of con troversy on Evolution. —J. M. M. —o— China Today Through Chinese Eyes. This Christian Student Movement pub lication—a reprint in America, because of the heavy demand for it here—brings to gether the contributions of four of China’s ablest younger leaders and two other unsigned articles which first ap peared in “The Life Journal,” influen tial organ of progressive thought in China. The volume has to do with differ-

ent phases of the Renaissance Movement, now sweeping China. It is certainly in forming. It offers a clear statement of “The New Tide of Thought” itself, the intellectual, economic and religious forces in the background of it. The tremendous and far-reaching importance of this Re naissance grows upon the thoughtful reader as he proceeds. Its bearing upon the political, the intellectual, and religious life of China and especially upon Chris tianity there, the missionary endeavor of Western Nations and the Native Church, becomes evident. The. note of hopeful assurance is struck. Evidently things are working together for the furtherance of the Gospel. And yet the several chapters are challenging in their kindly construc tive criticism of Western contacts in the Republic, political; religious, and eco nomic. The value of the discussion is enhanced by the fact that Chiha of today is in fact seen through Chinese eyes—, and the eyes of the very well informed. China’s viewpoint is evident and is wor thy of serious consideration by those who would be well informed in the matter of changes in the unchanging East, and es pecially by those who have to do with the evangelization of China’s millions. The book is a valuable contribution to cur rent missionary literature and eminently worth reading. (Price $1.25) A. E. K. —o— “Tarbell’s Teacher’s Guide” by Dr. Martha Tarbell, published by Fleming H. Revell Co., New York; $1.90. For twenty- two years Dr. Tarbell has prepared this annual volume on the Uniform Course of the International Sunday School Lessons. It is one of the very best “Helps” for Sunday School Teachers using this course of lessons, containing a wealth of material from which may be selected that which is appropriate for classes in the various departments of the Sunday School. Teachers who have used it in previous years will need no urging to do so again. And those who have not used it heretofore should treat themselves, and their classes, by using it this year. Like most “helps” nowadays it must be used with discrimination, because of some of the quotations. —J.H . H. — o — "Facts About Our Bible” by Pastor Elmer E. Franke, published by The Peo ple’s Christian Bulletin, New York. Paper, 50 cents; cloth, 75 cents. This modest little book, written from the fun damentalist viewpoint, presents the facts regarding the historicity, inerrancy and inspiration of the Bible in a simple and readable way. The history of our English Bible in its several versions, the older versions and the manuscripts which are its sources are well set forth. The canon of Scripture and its formation is described, and the differences between our Protestant Bible and the Bible, of the Roman church are explained.
