the enemy and slay the prowling creatures that would fain destroy. The staff is the emblem of His love and guardianship, the rod is the symbol of His power. Combined, they provide for every necessity of the benighted soul. Truly “he that walketh in darkness and hath no light,” may safely “trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.” For the Helper is not only loving and powerful, He is near ; “Thou art with me.” “A God afar off” might come too late, even if we cried unto Him; we might be swallowed up in the bog, we might be devoured of the beast, we might be slain by the enemy, ere He arrived; but He is “nigh at hand,” and we can sing: “Yea, though through death’s dark vale I walk, Yet will I fear no ill; For Thou art with me, and Thy rod And staff me comfort still.” MOSES said, “Stand still”; God said, “Go forward.”;“There are times when to “stand still and see the salvation of the LORD” is the only safe thing to do, but for the Children, of Israel that time had not yet arrived. Evidently they had not yet come to the brink of the Red Sea. They were appalled, not by it, but by the fear of it. . Their duty, however, was plain; they were under Divine guidance, and it was theirs to “g6 forward” unquestion- ingly as long as ever progress could be made; when further advance was impossible it would be time enough to stop. We need never trouble ourselves about the difficulties which lie a little ahead of u s: we are not to consider our future steps, the next is the only one that should concern Us. So long as the Red Sea is two paces in front of us we may disregard it; when our feet absolutely touch the waters, God will intervene to provide a pathway, or we may lawfully w'ait for His pleasure to be known. It may be He would have us walk on the sea, or through it; our sole business is to go on until we can go on no longer: if, perchance, He chooses for us to be drowned, well, “The worst that can come, But shortens our journey and hastens us home.” • Such a result, however, is far. more than unlikely; the probability is “the sea shall divide” and we -shall pass triumphant through the crystal walls, ■ ail M arch 12. “Forget not all his benefits — P sa .103:2. A telescope has two ends: look through the smaller end, and all objects are magnified and apparently brought near; use the larger end, and they appear to retreat, and become diminished. We are apt to gaze at our trials through the smaller end, and at our. mercies through the larger. We magnify our difficulties and our troubles, we minimize our blessings,'or allow them to pass from our memories. How good God has been to u s! let us not “forget all His benefits.” To remember them all would indeed be impossible; they are so varied and so manifold: “New they every morning are,” they are renewed every eventide, they follow and encompass us every moment of the day. None but the forgetful or the ungrate ful heart can fail to be “filled with wonder, love, and praise” at their variety and their abundance. Verily “He hath not dealt with us after our sins,” our deservings have not been the measure of His lovingkindness towards us. We should do well if we dwelt more upon these manifestations of His favor, and thought less of our tribulations. Our trials are transient, but His mer cies are everlasting. “Whoso offereth praise,” He hath said, “glorifieth me” ; alas! too many of us offer continually the unsav ory incense of querulous complaints, which neither glorify Him nor edify our neighbors, while they do us infinite harm. M arch 11. “Go forwardt”-figExodus 14:15. M arch 13. “As far as the east is from the west." — Psa. 103:12. AND how far is that? Is not the distance infinite and immeasurable?
