petitions into the infinite, in the vague hope that they may reach their destination somehow and bring down the blessing that is asked. What wonder that such men get discouraged and afraid in the days of stress and storm? A remote and almost unknown God is cold comfort for a soul oppressed and surrounded by well nigh palpable foes and fears. Let us learn the blessed lesson of the text: “The Lord is at hand”—He is not afar off, He is close; on our right hand “that we should not be moved.” We can turn to Him at any moment, and our lightest whisper will reach His ear as it does that of the friend who walks with us on a sum mer’s day. Ere we can make a formal petition and receive an answer from the skies (at least so it seems to us) we may be overwhelmed or destroyed, but here is “a very present help” in the Person of a very present Helper. To lack this sense of God’s immediate presence is to miss half the joy of life and more than half that feeling of security which is the heritage of all His children; it is also to endure hours of loneliness which we need never know. ’:. “DO not be distracted about anything.” But why not? Sim ply because there is no need. With an ever present God (see April 4) all such distraction is at once foolish and unnecessary. He is there for the very purpose, that He may deal with each difficulty and necessity of our life as it arises. It is our wisdom and our safety, therefore, to hand over each perplexing problem, each distracting care, each threatening danger, at its first appear ance; placing it in His all-powerful hands that He may deal with is as, in His wisdom, He sees fit.K“Be distracted about nothing the injunction is wide and comprehensive: about nothing; whether it concerns time or eternity, ourselves qr our loved ones. About nothing; not even about the things that come to us as the result of our own folly and shortcomings. For, truly, distrac tion on our part will not help us in the least. If He cannot heal us, we cannot heal ourselves ; if He is unable to save us, salva tion is indeed impossible; if Divine Love, combined with Omnip otence, can find no way out of the difficulty, we have no hope of safe emergence. “Be careful for nothing” : the lesson is not an easy one to learn, and most of us are far from being apt schol ars ; it is only by trusting God, and so testing Him, that the sweet wisdom can be learned. Meanwhile we grieve His love because we will not take Him at His word and let Him solve life’s problems, by making our heads and hearts sore with tbeir contemplation and their resultant pain. .^ 14 . HAPPY are they who clamber with their Lord up the mount of Transfiguration and are permitted to see His glory outshining before their eyes. Faith is strengthened, adoration is stimulated by the sight. Moreover there is a restful and holy calm in the air of the mountain; there is a thrill of deep emotion at being alipne with the Master, to which the worldling and the plain- dweller are alike strangers. What wonder if the heart’s all con suming desire is.to be permitted to remain? Is it surprising that the enrapt and enchanted disciple is ready to-cry out Such a desire is not, however, a truly healthy one. The lunatic, the blind, the halt, the maimed, the poor, the ignorant, are waiting our ministry in the plain beneath. Of them we must think, not of ourselves ; it behooves us to descend that we may bring them “good tidings of great joy;” that we may labor for their healing and their peace. Each hallowed experience, each beatific vision, is given us, not for its own sake—nor for ours alone— but that it may fit us the better to be followers of Him who “went about doing good.” Did we remain, He would inevitably depart and leave us alone on the then bleak hill top. A p r il S. “Be careful for nothing" — Phil. 4:6: A p r il 6 . "Lord, it is good for us to be here.’’±-Mark 9:5. ■ “My happy soul would stay In such a frame as this ; And sit and sing herself away To everlasting bliss” ? ■;
