A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

It was wonderful to welcome students from across Richmond last night to take part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Competition. The Year 10 speakers were so impressive and spoke with real passion about issues that matter most to them. It was a wonderful experience for all who took part. This morning our Year 9 Poetry by Heart finalists performed their poems in Year 7 assembly which was filmed to feature in a full documentary feature film intended for cinema and TV release, with launches around the country. It will highlight a selection of all the wonderful stories and journeys and learning adventures that will contribute to making Poetry By Heart 2025 magnificent, and it will help to strengthen the case for every child having access to high quality arts education. We had a number of trips out of school this week. Our Year 10 Histori- ans visited the Old Operating Theatre Museum, part of Old St Thomas’ Hospital, it is the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe for female patients. Our A level Spanish students attended a study day at the BFI Southbank which explored the legacy of dictatorship in contemporary Spanish cinema.

Next week it is the United Nations International Day of Happiness and in previous years the focus has included celebrating ‘Happy Heroes’, reclaiming happiness and the impact of relationships. This year’s theme is ‘Sharing and Caring’, encouraging everyone to engage in three simple steps to improve their own happiness and the happiness of those around them. The first step is to think about something you have found helpful or inspiring recently. Step two (care) is to consider who else might bene- fit from that help or inspiration. The final step is to share it with them by sending a text, voice note or going to see them in person. As the play- wright and philosopher, Howard Zinn, said: “We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world”. To co- incide with the International Day of Happiness, the organisation Action for Happiness is also hosting a webinar at 7pm on 20th March on the theme, which will include some insights from this year’s World Happiness Report. Other upcoming webinars from Action for Happiness include ‘Happiness Ripples: making a positive difference’ and ‘Appreciating beau- ty and goodness in our world’ . A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7

This week Year 7 have had another busy week, planning their Pot Plant competition entry, Benchball Team form the tournament on the 24 March, and looking ahead to Red Nose day and the Best Joke competition! They experienced a very interesting and though provoking assembly lead by Ms Dhir and Ms Salsbury which looked at the topics of International Women’s day and British Science week. Year 7 will be taking part in some follow up activities in tutor time next week. On Friday the U13 Cricket team took part in the Middlesex finals and we will hear about how they got on next week. The Year 7 Netball team were also in action and a report about this match will follow. Here are the tutor group Epraise totals from the last 7 days: 1st 7EEL, 2nd 7ESU, 3rd 7FGC. Here are the individual leader board 1st Annie B 7SON, equal 2nd Prisca C 7ESU, Ava S 7PCO, Kate C 7EEL and Demi W 7EEL. Well done all keep on earning those Epraise points. On Friday March 21st, students and staff are invited to wear red on this non-uniform day, and to make a voluntary donation using ParentPay to mark Red Nose Day. Please note: students who do not wish to wear red will be expected to wear their normal school uniform, and that all expectations still apply.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Girl of Ink & Stars’ by Kiran Millwood This book is a captivating story about a girl called Isabella, a cartographer’s daughter. She lives on an island called Joya. When her best friend Lupe disappears, Isabella is determined to join the search party by using her mapmaking skills and knowledge of the stars which help guide the search. The world beyond the walls is filled with monsters and ancient myths. Isabella must save not only Lupe but the island too. I enjoyed the character, Isabella, since she was resilient - she never gave up - and brave. I also liked how Isabella’s maps and knowledge transformed into something magical. The more you read the more secrets are revealed. If you liked ‘The Last Bear’ by Hannah Gold or ‘The Wolf Wilder’ by Katherine Rundell, since they also feature brave girls in magical settings, then you would enjoy this book.

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Many maths puzzles enhance logical reasoning. When playing maths puzzles, children need to follow a set of specific rules or steps, to come up with the correct answer. This process helps children to organise their thoughts. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!
