HYPER VISUAL SAMUEL ROSS SHAPES WATER

This installation showcasing Kohler Formation is appropriately dominated by the line’s signature, saturated Haptic Orange.

Samuel Ross discusses the collaboration between SR_A and Kohler .

S amuel Ross is a British Fashion Awards, and his work is at home in world-class collections like those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum. Ross is also the founder of SR_A, a company meant to explore what it calls “artisan-driven, industrial beauti- fication of precious garments, objects and space.” Ross has helped innovate wearable objects with LVMH, Nike, and Apple. And now he has brought that energy to Kohler. The first fruit of SR_A x Kohler artist and designer known for his exquisite taste. He has received accolades, including three British T E X T STEWART KELLER

collab was the Formation 01 Faucet. The fixture was immediately identi- fiable by its unexpected angles and bold Haptic Orange color. It seems to loudly insist that it be appreciated for its form as much as its function. The Formation 01 is cast as one singular, sculptural object, rather than through a more traditional plating process. And it is crafted from Neolast, a new material exclusive to Kohler that allows dramatic expressions of form, shape, and color. When it debuted, the faucet was hailed as a remarkable meeting of the innovative spirit of Ross and company and Kohler’s 150- year legacy of craftsmanship. Next came the Formation 02, a

limited edition smart toilet, which was instantly recognizable as the faucet’s sibling by their shared, vibrant color. But the brutalist silhouette also represents its own series of design departures. It is created using unique molding and tooling tech- niques that allow the base to incorporate sharper edges and angles intriguingly juxtaposed with soft- er, cylindrical shapes. Like the faucet, the piece in- vites those who encounter it to be more mindful of things we take for granted. And, surely, the miracle of indoor plumbing is worth putting some gratitude in anyone’s attitude. Ross notes that—in embarking upon the de- sign of the Formation pieces—he was interested in creating fixtures that redefine the encounters that make up our daily, necessary relationship with water. “Developing a perspective on this act is a generational contribution to a form and function study—related to developing new expectations for water solutions for future generations,” he says. He explains that the pieces’ “intentionally abstract, reductive use of form and color, at times minimal and arresting in application” is tied to SR_A valuing “experimentation, tied to hypervisual communica- tion.” “Throughout our history, we have operated on the leading-edge of innovation, creativity, and bold leadership—attributes that align with the approach of Samuel and SR_A,” says Kohler Chair and CEO David Kohler. He calls the partnership with SR_A “an experience unlike anything we have seen in the industry.” What will this multiyear collaboration explore next? Learn more by visiting sra.kohler.com. ■

T E X T STEWART KELLER I n previous issues, we have discussed the good work of WasteLAB, Kohler’s industry-leading business dedicated to reusing manufacturing waste. And with the arrival of a new product, they are giving eco-conscious homeowners another reason to celebrate: the Vox handcrafted bathroom sink. Vox is crafted using an innovative process that allows it to be made of more than 70 percent recycled materials while still meeting Kohler’s strict criteria for quality and style. According to WasteLAB, it’s a game changer. “This will allow us to look at a wider range of products that can reuse waste and help reach our goal of zero waste to landfill,” says Monty Stauffer, Kohler WasteLAB lead industrial designer, product and process. He adds that he and his team are also excited about providing consumers with another path for sustainable living. ■ SCRAP TO STYLE MAKE TASTE, NOT WASTE.

Kohler WasteLAB has diverted nearly 75,000 pounds of waste from landfills.

MEET THE DESIGNERS How would you describe your per- sonal design style? My personal style is classic with a few

What’s your approach when it comes to problem-solving? Problems crop up every day in a design project. Clients often struggle to see potential. The approach to resolve is by collaborating closely with our clients with clear, honest communication. What’s a color you love to work with? Charcoal. This color has a sense of warmth and stability. It also represents strength and is timeless. I love to pair it with earthy, warm, caramel colors. How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed out? I have a ritual. I take a nightly hot bath. It’s a great way to signal my body and mind that it’s time to wind down and acts as a reset button. Are there any iconic places to live that you’d like to try? Coastal living: the water is incredibly soothing. Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? We are in the process of selling our home, so I am really looking forward to designing our new one. I will be up-

bold statements—a great balance of timeless elegance with the right amount of personality. Who inspires you? My family is a huge source of inspira- tion. I am motivated to be a positive role model for my children, and my husband plays a significant part in that. Can you describe a memorable design project you’ve worked on? I really enjoyed working on a double brownstone in NYC. They are iconic: classic stoops, ornate moldings, and vintage fireplaces. But we also made room for fresh elements that meet contemporary needs. What a collabo- ration! Is there a TV show or movie that showcases design that you love? What do you love about it? I really love Property Brothers . The practical insight into the interplay be- tween design and structure is invalu- able. I also like how they use hidden spaces.

nce upon a time, architect Charles A. Platt—who is remembered by history for

counting Astors and Roosevelts among his clientele—designed a 12,000-square-foot neo-Georgian town house located in what is now Manhattan’s Upper East Side. A mere 120 years later, 24 top designers arrived to transform it into the 2024 Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York. As is often the case with show houses, it was amazing to expe- rience so many points of view unfolding in such close proximity. In addition, it was worth noting the names designers gave their spaces. Some were straightfor- ward and defined by the room’s purpose, such as Justin Scott’s “Dressing Room and Bath” (op- posite page). Meanwhile, others offered alluring nods to their own inspirations. Who wouldn’t want to experience Vanessa DeLeon’s dramatic “Smoke & Mirrors” bath (previous page) or Margaret Naeve Parker’s “Modern Romance” (at right)? Read on to see shots from other favorites. And after 49 years of Kips Bay Decorator Show Houses, we have seen designers do great things in kitchens and baths using the fixtures of longtime supporting partner Kohler. But this time, we enjoyed the trend of Kohler mak- ing its way into wet bar set-ups in other spaces, including Michelle Gerson’s “Watering Hole,” Phillip Thomas’ “Andes Club,” and Barbara Ostrom’s “Game Room.” Even when tucked into discreet corners, these additions expand- ed the entertaining potential of the spaces and got us thinking about where else we could use some additional flow in our next renovation.
