BMC Dept. of Anesthesiology Annual Report, 2024

Looking Ahead

LOOKING AHEAD

Anesthetics have been administered at this institution since the 1800s, and anesthesiology has played a pivotal role in the growth of Boston Medical Center. We take immense pride in our accomplishments in the three pillars that support departments like ours: patient care, education, and research. Many of our clinicians choose to receive their medical care here at Boston Medical Center—a testament to the exceptional and compassionate care we provide to all. Our department is renowned for the quality of education and training we offer our medical students and residents, who have entered a highly sought- after and competitive residency program. We are proud of the reputation we have built, and our graduates from both our medical school and residency program feel confident in the formative experiences they’ve gained in our environment. Our graduates consistently secure fellowships and careers at the most competitive institutions, a testament to the strength of our training. Our scholarly activities are noteworthy, with active participation in journal editorial boards, textbook editing, innovative research, and the use of multimedia for medical education. Our multimedia projects, such as the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation fire prevention video, have gained international recognition. This video, produced entirely at Boston Medical Center, has been translated into 11 languages and is distributed worldwide. Looking ahead, the most significant development is the expansion of our surgical suite with five additional state-of-the-art operating rooms. We are actively recruiting talented clinicians to complement our outstanding team. As part of the operating room redesign, we will also enjoy a dedicated anesthesia lounge—a much-needed space for respite, relaxation, and camaraderie. Our commitment to our residency program, to diversity and inclusion, to scholarly activities, and to faculty development is unwavering. Members of our department have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the 2024 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award and induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. I hope that as you read the individual descriptions of our faculty members, you will appreciate the eclectic and complementary nature of our department. Lastly, none of our accomplishments would be possible without our dedicated administrative staff, who are among the finest in our institution. Recent data on engagement and career satisfaction among our clinicians demonstrate that we have cultivated a healthy and inviting environment that exceeds national benchmarks. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our department. We look forward to continued success in the years to come.

I sincerely hope that you have enjoyed exploring this report as much as we enjoyed compiling it. I extend my deepest gratitude to Tom Falite, an intern from Merrimack College, whose meticulous collection and editing of the individual assets within this report deserve special recognition. His organization and dedication are evident throughout these pages.
