Residency Program
Boston holds a place of great significance in the history of anesthesia. In 1846, the world witnessed the first successful public demonstration of inhalation surgical anesthesia, a groundbreaking advancement that helped propel us into the modern age of medicine. In an effort to preserve the memory and significance of this pivotal event in the history of our field, our annual resident orientation sees new residents embark on a historical tour of key Boston landmarks that stand as testaments to anesthetic innovation. The tour encompasses the Ether Dome, the very operating room at Massachusetts General Hospital where the demonstration took place, and the Ether Monument, a fountain and statue serving as an elegant tribute within the Boston Public Garden.
The Department of Anesthesiology, an essential component of Boston Medical Center, is dedicated to providing superlative care for its patients and outstanding education to its faculty, residents and students in a fiscally responsible and academically stimulating environment. We strive to recruit a diverse group of physicians and teach them how to move mountains and provide exceptional care to each and every one of their patients. Our Anesthesia Residency Program is deeply aligned with the Department’s mission and values. Our goal is to cultivate a diverse group of trainees who are drawn to our program for its exceptional clinical anesthesia training, provided within a supportive and collaborative learning environment. We are committed to fostering a culture of excellence, where residents can thrive and develop into highly skilled anesthesiologists. Upon graduation, our residents are exceptionally well-prepared for successful careers in anesthesiology. Many pursue advanced training through prestigious fellowship programs, while others secure faculty positions at leading academic institutions. Our alumni have also excelled in private practice and have emerged as influential leaders in the field, making significant contributions to anesthesiology on both national and international stages. As the largest safety-net hospital in New England, Boston Medical Center serves a patient population with complex healthcare needs, including refugees, transgender individuals, and those struggling with substance use disorder. This unique patient demographic provides our residents with invaluable opportunities to develop cultural competency, compassion, and expertise in managing complex medical conditions. Through a progressive curriculum, residents gradually assume increasing clinical responsibilities, ensuring they meet all ACGME Milestones upon graduation.
Pictured above is the Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program Class of 2027 posing around the plinth of the Ether Monument, as is tradition for all our incoming residents. This unique experience allows our incoming residents to connect with the rich history of their chosen field and aids in appreciating the profound impact this Boston-based discovery has had on surgical practices worldwide.
