Residency Program
Residency Program
The Boston Medical Center’s Anesthesiology Residency Training Program is founded upon a tripartite philosophy encompassing patient care, education, and research. While delivering exceptional patient care remains our paramount objective, we recognize the indispensable role of education and research in cultivating well-rounded and accomplished anesthesiologists. To ensure the highest standards of patient care, all resident clinical activities, regardless of training level, are meticulously supervised by appropriately credentialed faculty. Our program is rooted in evidence-based medicine, with a progressive approach to clinical responsibility. Residents are entrusted with patient care responsibilities that align with their stage of training, demonstrated competencies, and accumulated experience. As residents advance through the program, their clinical duties and responsibilities expand to reflect their growing knowledge base, clinical confidence, and expertise. Beyond clinical excellence, we prioritize the development of our residents’ pedagogical abilities. As they progress in their training, residents are afforded opportunities to refine their teaching and precepting skills. Our program is dedicated to creating a rich and stimulating learning environment that empowers residents to become exemplary clinicians and educators. Through a comprehensive curriculum that balances clinical exposure, academic rigor, and research involvement, our graduates emerge as highly skilled and confident anesthesiologists prepared to assume leadership roles within the field.
The Department of Anesthesiology at the Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center is committed to maintain the highest standards of education and training of future Anesthesiology consultants. The scope of training includes but is not limited to:
• Assessment of, consultation for and preparation of patients for anesthesia • Relief and prevention of pain during and following surgical, obstetrical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures • Monitoring and maintenance of normal physiology during the perioperative period • Management of critically ill patients • Diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic and cancer related pain • Clinical management and teaching of cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation • Evaluation of respiratory function and application of respiratory therapy • Conducting of clinical and basic science research • Supervision, teaching and evaluation of performance of personnel, both medical and paramedical, involved in perioperative care
Pictured left is Nicholas Hernandez, MD, PhD, delivering Grand Rounds to the Department of Anesthesiology. Residents have the opportunity to hone their presentation skills as a part of their training by presenting a formal lecture to the Department.
The success of the program is measured by residents’ completion of program requirements and national board exams, graduate placement in the job of his or her choice, graduate career satisfaction including understanding their own work/life balance and the development of future leaders in anesthesia.
