The Clinical Base Year Program is directed by Dr. Patrick O’Neal , general surgeon with an emphasis on endocrine surgery and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. Dr. O’Neal completed his residency in general surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and his fellowship in endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition to creating a supportive environment for our interns, his educational mission finds him working extensively with medical students. As such, he serves as Associate Director for the 3rd year core surgery rotation for Boston University medical students.
Dr. O’Neal imparts the following message on behalf of the Clinical Base Year Program:
“ The VA Boston Healthcare System offers an exceptional foundation for aspiring perioperative physicians and anesthesiologists. Our Clinical Base Year internship provides a supportive environment where interns learn the intricacies of surgical patient care. Under the mentorship of renowned VA surgical faculty affiliated with Boston University and Harvard University, interns collaborate with surgical residents from Boston Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, fostering a strong professional network. Our curriculum is meticulously designed to prepare interns for a successful career in anesthesia and perioperative medicine. Core rotations in general surgery, surgical critical care, emergency medicine, and anesthesiology are complemented by specialized experiences in otolaryngology, cardiac surgery, cardiology, surgical ICU, anesthesia, and acute pain management. This comprehensive training equips interns with a deep understanding of airway management, cardiopulmonary physiology, invasive monitoring, and pain management techniques, setting the stage for a distinguished medical career. ”
