EDUCATION AND TRAINING
A Message From the Director of MEDICAL STUDENT CLERKSHIP Alexis Ramirez, MD The Boston Medical Center Department of Anesthesiology offers a dynamic and comprehensive clinical experience for medical students, both from Boston University School of Medicine and across the nation. Our program seamlessly integrates classroom learning with hands-on rotations in various anesthetizing locations, including the Menino and Moakley Operating Rooms, the Labor and Delivery Floor, and off-site procedural settings. To enhance their surgical clerkship experience, third-year medical students can opt for a focused two-week clinical elective in anesthesiology, while fourth-year students have the opportunity for a more immersive four-week elective. Students can choose to rotate with anesthesiology attendings in the surgical intensive care unit, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Alternatively, a four-week elective in the anesthesia multimedia laboratory allows students to develop interactive educational content using cutting-edge audio-visual and technological tools. Furthermore, students have the chance to actively contribute to ongoing faculty research projects and publications, fostering their academic growth. Students are a vital part of our educational ecosystem, participating alongside residents in didactic activities to gain a strong theoretical foundation. Clinical rotations emphasize practical skills development, from preoperative patient evaluation and anesthetic plan creation to mastering basic procedures like bag-mask ventilation, oral airway placement, and IV catheter insertion. Students also progress to advanced airway management techniques using endotracheal tubes and laryngeal mask airways. To solidify their learning and ensure preparedness, each surgical clerkship group undergoes a dedicated simulation session at the Solomont Simulation Center. This session focuses on honing critical skills like IV placement, airway management, and lumbar puncture techniques. By providing exposure to these often-unseen procedures, we equip students with a unique skillset that benefits them throughout their medical education and future careers.
Our residents are afforded ample opportunities to cultivate their professional growth as aspiring consultants in anesthesiology. The program is meticulously designed to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and mindset essential for success in this demanding field. Medical students are also integral to this vibrant community, benefitting immensely from exposure to the intricacies of anesthesiology. Pictured here is a compelling moment during a simulation session, where future residents and students are immersed in realistic clinical scenarios. This hands-on approach is fundamental to developing the critical thinking, problem-solving, and clinical judgment necessary for providing exceptional patient care.
