Education and Training

Providing Unique Academic Opportunities Since 2015, the Multimedia Laboratory within the Department of Anesthesiology has offered Boston University medical students a distinctive opportunity to contribute to our productions through a unique four-week multimedia rotation. This immersive experience provides students with ample time to deepen their medical knowledge while simultaneously gaining invaluable insights into the realm of media production. By seamlessly integrating traditional academic content with the dynamic tools of digital photography, videography, graphic design, animation, and audio production, students are able to develop a comprehensive understanding of complex medical concepts. Moreover, their acquisition of proficiency in technologies often unfamiliar to medical professionals equips them with powerful tools for communication and academic advancement. Our Multimedia Lab serves as a hub for medical media and education innovation. We are committed to fostering the development of well-equipped, technically adept clinicians. Whether it’s through the creation of engaging digital instructional materials disseminated online or through hands-on collaboration with students producing clinical vignettes for our residency program, we are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of medical education in the digital age. We take immense pride in the academic opportunities our Multimedia Laboratory provides and the remarkable outcomes it has allowed us to achieve. We warmly invite students, staff, faculty, and visitors to explore our work and discover the tremendous and ever-expanding potential of multimedia in medical education.

Multimedia LABORATORY

The Department of Anesthesiology has a rich history of utilizing multimedia for medical education. For over two decades since the advent of computer-assisted instruction, we have been at the forefront of developing innovative and engaging digital tools to teach medicine, with a particular emphasis on anesthesiology. This has been made possible by our Multimedia Laboratory, a separate entity from the media and marketing teams for the greater BMC organization and housed within our Department. Our decorated multimedia unit has garnered recognition from the World Health Organization, receiving a letter of commendation for producing a pulse oximetry video in six languages, aimed at reaching a global audience. Furthermore, our laboratory boasts one of the largest collections of programs published in the New England Journal of Medicine’s media library dedicated to videos in clinical medicine. Over the past 25 years, our Multimedia Lab has consistently earned numerous accolades at national conferences. These include over a dozen awards from the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists Postgraduate Assembly, and three consecutive American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Awards for Outstanding Scientific and Educational exhibits. In addition to producing all the digital assets featured in the renowned textbook “Clinical Anesthesia,” edited by Barash and colleagues, our Multimedia Lab has contributed digital educational components for the Malignant Hypothermia Association of North America (MHAUS) and the Neurocritical Care Society. Our teaching program leverages the extensive collection of images and videos we have amassed over the years, facilitating interactive learning experiences and enabling the implementation of innovative teaching methodologies.
