Our consultation-based acute pain service was established in January 2020 under the leadership of Dr. Nicole Spence. This specialized team offers expert guidance to healthcare providers on the optimal management of postoperative and other acute pain conditions. Beyond providing medication management recommendations, the service also delivers critical care for select patients through the insertion and management of continuous epidural catheters. To ensure uninterrupted care, we maintain two dedicated in-house teams for night and weekend call coverage. One team is comprised of an attending anesthesiologist and two residents and is responsible for covering the Menino OR, serving patients needing trauma and acute care surgeries. A second team focuses on Labor and Delivery, staffed by an attending anesthesiologist and one resident. In instances of increased patient volume or complex cases, additional anesthesiologists can be called in to support the teams. Our call teams are composed of highly skilled anesthesiologists with specialized expertise in various areas of care. This includes trauma, obstetrics, cardiology, and pediatrics, allowing us to provide comprehensive pain management services across diverse patient populations. Our anesthesiology team embraces cutting-edge technology, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment to ensure optimal patient outcomes. In 2019, we made a significant investment in our Department by upgrading our anesthesia machines to the advanced Dräger Apollo models. These machines offer superior capabilities, including specialized pediatric ventilation and advanced gas management systems that contribute to both patient safety and environmental sustainability. Beyond anesthesia machines, our Department is equipped with a comprehensive array of modern airway management tools. These include advanced imaging technologies such as video laryngoscopes, video bronchoscopes, and ultrasound, as well as specialized equipment for monitoring cardiac function and neuromuscular activity. Additionally, every operating room is outfitted with automated medication dispensing machines for enhanced efficiency and safety. These technological advancements, combined with the expertise of our anesthesiologists, position our Department at the forefront of patient care.
