2024 Residency Program GRADUATION
In his message to the graduating class of 2024, Department Chair Dr. Ortega acknowledged the evolving landscape of healthcare, particularly in anesthesiology. He emphasized the challenges new anesthesiologists may face, including financial strain on health systems, political uncertainty, evolving regulations, and competition for skilled providers. However, Dr. Ortega encouraged the graduates to view these challenges as opportunities for growth and resilience. “You are now part of a rich legacy that has shaped the landscape of modern medicine,” Dr. Ortega said, highlighting the significant global impact physician anesthesiologists have made throughout history. After citing numerous examples of pioneering anesthesiologists whose innovations have revolutionized medical practice. Dr. Ortega reminded the graduates of their recent contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing critical care, education, and research. He also noted the significance of National Doctor’s Day commemorating Dr. Crawford Long’s pioneering use of general anesthesia in surgery.
Dr. Ruben Azocar was the guest of honor at the 2024 Anesthesiology Residency Program Graduation. Dr. Azocar’s illustrious career includes his current role as Vice President for Perioperative Services at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as well as previous positions as our Residency Program Director, Chair of Anesthesiology at Tufts and President of the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Azocar, an alumnus of our residency program, expressed his admiration for the recent accomplishments of his alma mater in the field of anesthesiology.
In closing, Dr. Ortega urged the graduates to reflect on their impact and embrace their potential to make a profound difference. He emphasized the importance of compassion, humility, and unwavering dedication in upholding the legacy of their specialty, built on the shoulders of giants.
