A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

It was wonderful to welcome students from across Richmond last night to take part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out Competition. The Year 10 speakers were so impressive and spoke with real passion about issues that matter most to them. It was a wonderful experience for all who took part. This morning our Year 9 Poetry by Heart finalists performed their poems in Year 7 assembly which was filmed to feature in a full documentary feature film intended for cinema and TV release, with launches around the country. It will highlight a selection of all the wonderful stories and journeys and learning adventures that will contribute to making Poetry By Heart 2025 magnificent, and it will help to strengthen the case for every child having access to high quality arts education. We had a number of trips out of school this week. Our Year 10 Histori- ans visited the Old Operating Theatre Museum, part of Old St Thomas’ Hospital, it is the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe for female patients. Our A level Spanish students attended a study day at the BFI Southbank which explored the legacy of dictatorship in contemporary Spanish cinema.

Next week it is the United Nations International Day of Happiness and in previous years the focus has included celebrating ‘Happy Heroes’, reclaiming happiness and the impact of relationships. This year’s theme is ‘Sharing and Caring’, encouraging everyone to engage in three simple steps to improve their own happiness and the happiness of those around them. The first step is to think about something you have found helpful or inspiring recently. Step two (care) is to consider who else might bene- fit from that help or inspiration. The final step is to share it with them by sending a text, voice note or going to see them in person. As the play- wright and philosopher, Howard Zinn, said: “We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world”. To co- incide with the International Day of Happiness, the organisation Action for Happiness is also hosting a webinar at 7pm on 20th March on the theme, which will include some insights from this year’s World Happiness Report. Other upcoming webinars from Action for Happiness include ‘Happiness Ripples: making a positive difference’ and ‘Appreciating beau- ty and goodness in our world’ . A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

It has been another very busy week for our year 13 students, now they have completed their mock examinations.

Our year 13 Spanish students attended a study day at the BFI on Tuesday. This is an excellent day out for the students, as it helps our students prepare for their final examinations. All students found it extremely interesting and are now feeling more confident towards their final exams. On Wednesday our EPQ students were completing their presentations. This is an important part of the EPQ and is one of the final parts of the project that they need to complete. I am very impressed with how hard all the students have worked on their projects alongside their A level studies. I always find it so interesting to see the topics that the students have chosen to study in more depth.

Lastly on Thursday, our Year 13 music students attended a music lecture. During this lecture, students were given helpful study tips to help support them for their final examinations.

A reminder that year 13 students no longer need to attend tutor time, but they must be punctual and attend all timetabled lessons. If a student is unwell or is going to be off school, please email sixthform@waldegravesch.org as soon as possible.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen “When they first arrived, they came quietly and stealthily as if they tip-toed into the world when we were all looking the other way.” Through the eyes of nine-year-old Ade, we see a dystopian London be infiltrated by the “Bluchers”, menacing plants, dissolving all buildings in sight. Ade’s stabil- ity is at risk, and with a mother to care for and no chance of escape, he’s all on his own. Its unique exploration of themes such as depression, sacrifice, bravery and death make this book, despite it being a science fiction, radiate reality. Ade’s perspective of his story is handled with maturity and care, reflecting his role as a young carer that could easily place him as one of the thousands in our world. At a time of world conflicts infiltrating our lives, the ‘Boy in the Tower’ makes readers believe in true, beautiful human kindness through the relationships Ade builds throughout the novel. FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Many maths puzzles enhance logical reasoning. When playing maths puzzles, children need to follow a set of specific rules or steps, to come up with the correct answer. This process helps children to organise their thoughts. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!
