WE’RE NOT DONE YET Celebrating Our 10-Year Anniversary

July 1, 2013, was my first day as the owner of Anderson Dental Care, so this month, I celebrate my 10th anniversary. It’s crazy to think that this day has come! I remember when I first began my career, I set goals for 10 years in the future. Now that an entire decade has passed, I find myself reflecting on those years and looking at everything Anderson Dental Care has accomplished. Some of those goals have been achieved, and some have changed over the years. But through it all, one thing stands out — I couldn’t have done it alone.

to Dr. Mark Stoffregen, the previous owner of Anderson Dental Care, for trusting me to continue what he built.

Dr. Stoffregen had a 30-year legacy — his patients were loyal and trusted him. Taking over for him, I knew I would have huge shoes to fill! Dr. Stoffregen assured his patients they’d be in good hands, and I’ve worked hard every day to keep that promise. I’m grateful his patients trusted him enough to believe in me, too, and continue receiving care at Anderson Dental Care, even if some of you poked fun at how young I was.

And from then on, I have been fortunate to have so many new patients join our growing practice — and I thank each of you! Thank you for

I’ve been so supported and buoyed up by my incredible wife, family, and wonderful team members over the years, especially our current amazing staff. Lydia and Ali have both been with me for six of my 10 years, and Whitney has been there for nearly half. Katelyn, Caitlin, and Avery have been great additions over the last few years we’re so lucky to have found, and I look forward to the next decade with them on our team. I also recognize the many specialized oral health practitioners who have treated me with respect from day one and referred patients to my practice,

continuing to trust us and referring your friends and family. Your support will never go unnoticed!

It’s been an honor getting to know every patient, building relationships with each of you, and caring for your oral health needs. My goal has always been to create a safe and comfortable environment that makes going to the dentist an enjoyable experience. While I believe my team and I have accomplished this goal, there is always room to grow and improve! Therefore, I will continue to nurture your experience and ensure you receive the best care possible. As I look back at the past 10 years, it’s been an incredible journey! It has certainly had its challenges, but with the support of so many people, we as a practice were able to overcome those challenges and even grow stronger through them.

consultants who’ve helped me improve patient care and understand better the ins and outs of running a business, dental labs we work with to get crowns and bridges just right, and so many other vendors, suppliers, cleaners and more who help us keep our practice running smoothly.

But the biggest group I have to thank is YOU, our wonderful patients‑turned-friends.

Immediately following graduation from dental school, I bought Anderson Dental Care. I took a big risk by doing this — I was going against the grain. Most doctors work as an employee at a dental office for at least a couple of years before considering branching out on their own. But I had a vision and was adamant about making it a reality. I’m so grateful

Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for a wonderful 10 years. Here’s to the next decade — we’re not done here!

ARE YOU EXPERIENCING TOOTH SENSITIVITY? Cold Beverages and Foods Can Cause Discomfort! During the summer, nothing sounds better than a cold treat or beverage on a hot day. But have you ever been eating or drinking something cold and felt discomfort in your mouth? Some people believe that tooth sensitivity is normal — but it’s not! Here’s what you need to know. WHAT IS TOOTH SENSITIVITY? Dentin hypersensitivity, or tooth sensitivity, is an oral discomfort that occurs when the daily wear and tear on your teeth causes the enamel to wear away. When this happens, foods and beverages high in sugar or acid can reach your tooth’s pulp (nerve) and cause pain and discomfort. WHAT CAUSES TOOTH SENSITIVITY? You may feel pain and discomfort when consuming cold foods and drinks for multiple reasons. One cause could be poor oral hygiene — if you aren’t brushing and flossing daily, lingering food becomes plaque and can turn into tartar. However, you can experience tooth sensitivity even if you brush twice a day! Brushing your teeth and gums too hard or with a hard-bristled toothbrush can bruise your gums, cause bleeding, and lead to tooth sensitivity. Other causes can be tooth decay, receding gums, and gingivitis. Additionally, if you have any untreated cavities, it could also cause your teeth to ache when you eat sweets or cold treats. Cavities start as tiny holes in your teeth, and they will eventually expose the pulp. Since the pulp is the most sensitive part of your tooth, eating and drinking cause discomfort. Excessive teeth grinding, alcohol or tobacco use, or bleaching kits can also cause sensitivity. SIGNS OF TOOTH SENSITIVITY. The symptoms you may experience depend on the severity of the damage to your teeth. However, common symptoms (besides experiencing pain and discomfort) include halitosis, receding gums, gum swelling and redness, pus or discharge from gums, difficulty chewing, and popping noises when you open and close your mouth.

THE LIFE LESSONS OF A FAMILY GARAGE SALE A summer garage sale is a tried and tested way to earn a little cash while eliminating things you no longer need. But it’s also the perfect opportunity for parents to teach their children a few life lessons. Making your garage sale a family project can teach kids about organization, money management, and the pride of a hard day’s work. The lessons start immediately as your family determines what they no longer need. Younger children, in particular, often struggle to part with their possessions. A garage sale is an opportunity to discuss what they use, what they don’t, and why we can’t keep every object we own forever. This process will teach kids organization as they create their “keep,” “sell,” and “toss” piles. On the big day, your children can also play a significant role in organizing and displaying your merchandise. Kids can help determine which items should share a table and what should be front and center to catch buyers’ eyes. Math and money management also play a pivotal role in any successful garage sale. First, you must determine what the items you’re selling are worth. While letting your kids set prices is probably unwise, you can help them understand market value and what people will pay for used merchandise. Your children can take a more active role in the sale itself. Depending on their ages, they can gain valuable experience making change for customers or negotiating a deal on the items for sale. The best part of using your garage sale as a learning opportunity is that your children can personally experience the value of hard work. They’ll watch their old possessions disappear and the cash trickle in. More than anything, they’ll probably love adding up the day’s takings. Whether or not you give your kids a cut of the earnings is up to you. But even if they don’t end up with fatter pockets, your children will walk away from the family garage sale with lessons that will last longer than any extra cash could. HELP KIDS LEARN WHILE THEY EARN

There are several different ways we can treat tooth sensitivity. You may need fillings for your cavities, a dental crown, or another dental procedure. Sometimes, tooth sensitivity is a symptom

of another health condition. Because of this, it’s vital that you connect with our team at Anderson Dental Care.

Tooth sensitivity is treatable! So, don’t feel ashamed or afraid to visit us. We care about you and want you to live a pain-free life! Please don’t hesitate to call or visit us with any questions or concerns.

SUMMER FUN WITHOUT THE BURN

PROTECT YOUR SKIN WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS

Summer is in full swing, which means the sun’s rays are shining bright for most of the country. In fact, the average UV index, or the intensity of ultraviolet light, across the U.S. is 7 or above on a scale of 13. To put that into perspective, a UV index of 3 is strong enough to damage the skin. However, just because the UV index is high doesn’t mean you have to hide inside — you just need to practice a bit of safety when you’re outdoors! To protect you and your family during the hottest months of the year, here are three ways to keep your skin sunburn-free. USE SUNSCREEN WHENEVER YOU’RE OUTSIDE — EVEN WHEN IT’S CLOUDY. Many think sunscreen is only necessary at the beach or near a pool. However, the sun’s harmful

rays will always reach your skin, no matter what you’re doing outside. Also, remember that while clouds may look like they’re blocking the sun, UV rays easily penetrate them and water like an ocean, lake, or pool. That’s why sunscreen is essential whenever you’re outside, even for just 20 minutes on a cloudy day. Choose a broad-spectrum sunblock that is at least 30 SPF and protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Reapply every two hours, and if you’re swimming or playing in the water, reapply every hour! CHOOSE YOUR OUTSIDE TIME WISELY. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so your skin is much more susceptible to damage during this period. If you can, save

outdoor tasks (like yardwork) for early morning or late afternoon. If you are planning to spend some time outside within this time frame, it’s best to do so in the shade. You can also use the shadow rule: If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are strong enough to damage your skin, so it’s time to find shade. PICK THE RIGHT OUTFITS. If possible, choose darker-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants made with tightly woven fabrics like canvas or synthetic materials such as nylon. Then, protect your face, neck, and ears with a wide-brimmed hat and cover your eyes with 99% to 100% UV-absorbent sunglasses. These types of clothing and accessories block more of the sun’s rays from ever reaching your skin and minimize your risk of a severe sunburn.

YOUR MONTHLY NEED-TO-KNOWS WHY IS IT CALLED THE ALPHABET? During the Middle Ages, citizens began using the word alphabet to describe the letters they used in their literature. Alphabet is derived from the Latin word alphabetum , which originated from the Greeks’ term alphab tos. This term combines the first two letters of the Greek alphabet — alpha and beta . WHERE DOES SPAGHETTI COME FROM? According to popular history, China invented spaghetti, and Marco Polo brought the dish to Venice, Italy. However, other historians theorize that spaghetti was created between 1000 and 1100 A.D. in Sicily. WHAT YEAR WERE THE MOST BABIES BORN? When you think about the “baby boom,” your mind may think about the baby boomer generation of 1946-1964. In 1957, the U.S. had the most recorded births, totaling 4,308,000. However, this record was broken in 2007 when 4,317,119 babies were born. Did we experience a second wave of the baby boom?!
