THE KING’S BUSINESS
of Christ over death and His enemies was dramatically complete. All that they had done was undone, for He had risen from the dead. Death had fled, the grave had capitu lated, His enemies were vanquished. The resurrection of Christ has certain re sults with reference to the believer : In the first place, it begets a settled conviction with regard to the reality of Christian faith. There are times when, like Thomas, we seek for signs, when our faith needs strengthen ing. A glance at the empty tomb assures us that the Father is satisfied with the work of Christ, that our sins are pardoned, that we are completely justified in the death and resurrection of our Saviour. We are not deluded; we know whom we have believed. Then the resurrection- of Christ is the guarantee of our own resurrection. Jesus said, “Because I live, ye shall live also.” Are there times when we doubt whether we shall, according to the promises of Scrip ture, awaken in His likeness on that resur rection morning? Are we tempted to doubt the reality of this great fact? Then let us look away to the tomb, see the risen Christ, listen to1the word of the angels, and let our doubts die away in the anthem of that first Easter morning, “He is not here ; He is risen as He said.” Canst thou, my heart, lift up thy voice and sing: “I know that my Re deemer liveth, and because He lives I, too, shall live” ?
He will raise Him from the dead and exalt Him to His own right hand in the heavenly places. The resurrection of Christ was the seal of the Father’s approval on the truth of the claims that Christ made as to His redemp tive work. The death and resurrection of Christ are always considered and dealt with together in the Scriptures. The cross is the meeting place of man’s sin and God’s grace. It was there that the atonement was made. So Christ and the Apostles taught. This being the idea of Christ’s death, how does the resurrection affect it? It is to be con sidered as the completion of Christ’s re demptive work. If He had remained under the power of death, then His redemptive work was a failure, for how could He save others from that power from which He could not deliver Himself? Further, the resurrection of Christ marked Christ off as being the Son of God in a unique sense. It shows Him to be sep arated from all other sons of men. The resurrection of Christ also signifies Christ’s victory over His enemies, death, the grave and the devil. When that stone was rolled over the mouth of the tomb the en emies of Christ believed that they had for ever silenced the Master, and completely ended His cause. But the morning of the Resurrection changed it all and the victory
