St. Patrick’s Day vs. the Color Green

When it comes to a vision for our practice, we put one principle above all others. We want to provide more in value to our patients than they pay in dollars. If we do that, we give them a reason to keep coming back. It’s easier said than done. Finding ways to add value is a constant initiative for me and my staff. Coaches are crucial in this regard. They help us identify and attack areas for added value the same way an offensive coordinator designs a plan for a team to succeed on the field. Our goal is for every patient who walks through our doors to be happier and healthier after visiting us. We strive to form a real, meaningful bond that inspires confidence in our work. We want to do such a good job that you can’t help but tell your friends and family about us. Whether or not you’re a fan of going to the dentist, we want you to be a fan of us. We are always grateful that you’ve chosen us as your dental practice. We are well aware that you don’t have to come to us — New Yorkers are spoiled for choice, after all — which is why we’re so thankful you do.

We all have coaches realizing there is always something more to learn. The challenges and opportunities facing us are similar to what other offices have experienced; everything happening to us has happened to those who’ve come before. History shows that there’s always a solution available. There are people who possess the knowledge we are looking for — the insight to help us scale new heights. Why reinvent the wheel when we can seek out these folks’ expertise and guidance? Over the years, I’ve learned that a coachable mindset and a willingness to evolve are the two most essential traits a dentist and his staff can cultivate. Our practice has been involved in coaching for many years. Coaching develops culture and helps to establish the values and goals of a practice. Insightful coaches don’t just point out areas needing correction; they provide the tools necessary for growth and improvement. They teach us that we get what we deserve and to not make excuses for what happens to us. That’s something everyone can benefit from, no matter their level of mastery or success.

Wet, Wild, and Wonderful NYC Facts

Ultimately, we are striving to inhabit a “Category of One,” differentiating our practice from all others on the Upper East Side and ensuring our patients receive a level of service and care they won’t find anywhere else. Those are lofty goals, but we know we need to seek out coaching in order to achieve them. Even after he became the greatest player in the NBA, Michael Jordan sought out the visionary guidance of Phil Jackson. That desire to always learn and never get complacent is something we believe in. It’s something we act out every day in every interaction with every patient. If you know anyone looking for great care, please send them our way. The best compliment a patient can give us is the referral of your friends and family members. We know those compliments aren’t given; they have to be earned. We’ll always keep working to earn them.

GREEN DOMINATES ST. PATRICK’S DAY FOR A REASON

Why Green Is the Color of St. Patrick’s Day

landscape. It also relates to the green in the flag. Each of the three colors in the flag have their own symbolic meaning: green for the Catholics who live in the country, orange for the Protestants, and white for the peace between the two. Of course, you can’t forget leprechauns, the little creatures that have always been affiliated with the holiday. But just like St. Patrick’s original blue garb, these impish tricksters used to wear red instead of green. While green overtook blue as the shade of choice for St. Patrick, leprechauns began putting on their signature green suits. You might wonder where the tradition of pinching comes from. We can thank the leprechauns for this one. It’s said that if the gold-loving redheads caught you not wearing their favorite color, they would pinch you. To avoid pinches from leprechauns and people alike, be sure to put on some green this St. Patrick’s Day to blend in with the festive crowd.

probably been pinched by your peers, family, spouse, and anyone else decked out head to toe in green.

Green has become so deeply associated with the St. Patrick holiday that many people are unaware that green wasn’t always its official color. Blue was the first color to symbolize St. Patrick’s Day, and the saint himself is almost always depicted dressed in what’s known as “St. Patrick’s blue.” What caused the shift from blue to green is more speculation than hard fact. Some have theorized that the change happened sometime in the 17th century, when the symbol for the United Irishmen Rebellion became the clover. St. Patrick used the clover to teach the Irish people about the Holy Trinity, and it eventually became a symbol that represented both the saint and the holiday. Another theory comes from Ireland’s nickname, “The Emerald Isle,” which was coined because of the plentiful green foliage that adorns the country’s Invisalign appeals to many patients for a number of reasons. First and foremost, the aligners are essentially invisible. Nobody will even know you’re wearing them. Despite their outward invisibility, the aligners do real, demonstrable work. Most patients start to notice changes in their smile as early as six weeks into treatment. Other advantages of Invisalign include comfort and removability. The clear aligners are made of a BPA-free thermoplastic material that’s smooth to the touch and lays flat against your teeth. They are so comfortable that you may even forget you’re wearing them. You should remove your aligners for meals and can take them out for special occasions, but this flexibility can be both a blessing and a curse. If you don’t wear your aligners as often as possible, you’ll stall your progress. The results of straightening your teeth aren’t just cosmetic. Straight teeth are less likely to break or develop gum disease, which means investing in your smile now will save you from needing treatments later.

There’s only one day of the year you’ll be scorned for not wearing green: St. Patrick’s Day. If you’ve ever gone the whole holiday wearing any other color, you’ve

TEETH STRAIGHTENING FOR EVERYONE It’s Possible With Invisalign

Everyone deserves to have a smile they love, and with today’s modern dental technology, that goal is attainable. A generation ago, straightening options were limited to old-school bracket-and- wire braces. These work well, but they’re considered taboo for adults. Invisalign, which straightens your teeth using custom- made clear trays, is a great alternative for patients of all ages. The way Invisalign works is not completely different from traditional braces. In both cases, your teeth are realigned gradually. The difference comes in form. With braces, an orthodontist regularly tinkers with your wiring depending on where you are in the process. With Invisalign, on the other hand, you change aligners throughout treatment as you move from origin to destination. Depending on the results you’d like to achieve, treatment usually lasts between 8 months and 2 years.

Invisalign is a great option for adult and adolescent patients alike. If you’ve ever wondered how kids have straighter teeth than ever but fewer seem to be wearing braces, now you know. Call our office today to find out if Invisalign is right for you.

4K, HDR, and OLED Defined

HDR High Dynamic Range, or HDR, is a type of image processing. When an image is processed, HDR is used to increase or decrease the luminosity of the image. It means bright whites, deeper blacks, and improved colors overall. It’s been used in photography for decades and in video since the 1990s. Most 4K TVs have built-in HDR processing, resulting in better color quality, which translates to better image quality overall. OLED Short for organic light-emitting diode, OLED TVs feature a microscopically thin layer of an organic compound that emits light when an electric current is introduced. Typical LED TVs rely on a backlight in order to produce a lit, visible image. These backlights take up space, resulting in a thicker TV. The major advantage of OLED TVs is they are incredibly thin and light, and they produce deeper blacks for an improved color and image quality. When choosing a TV, it’s important to select a brand you trust. It’s not a decision to take lightly. The same goes for selecting a dental office. You wouldn’t choose a cut-rate TV, so why do the same when it comes to your oral health?

When you shop for a new TV these days, you’re greeted with a bevy of acronyms and numbers — marketing terms you can’t make sense of. These are terms like 4K, HDR, and OLED, just to name a few. TV makers leave it up to you to figure out what these terms mean. Well, look no further. We’re going to cut through the marketing speak and get to the point. Here’s what today’s popular TV marketing terms really mean. 4K The TV buzzword “4K” has replaced “HDTV” and “1080p” as the go-to marketing term. In short, it’s a reference to the number of pixels on the screen. Standard high-definition TVs (1080p) have a vertical resolution of 1,080 pixels and a horizontal resolution of 1,920. Here’s where it gets weird. 4K TVs have a vertical resolution of 2,160 pixels with a horizontal resolution of 3,840. Marketers decided to swap the vertical resolution as their reference point with the horizontal resolution, because higher numbers are more impressive, right? But 4K TVs seem to fall short of the moniker. Regardless, these TVs have improved color and image quality over standard HD, but you have to have devices — such as the PlayStation 4 Pro or a Blu-ray player — or services that output in 4K to take advantage of the boost in pixels.

WATER SECRETS OF NYC From Central Park to the Subway

any New Yorker can surely attest. The biggest natural threat to the subway system is water, which makes sense given that the tunnels are built near plugged up springs. According to the MTA, about 13 million gallons of water need to be pumped from the system every day — and that’s not including the times when severe weather completely floods it. Maybe one day we’ll just have an underground waterway in lieu of the trains we use now.

It may not be tropical with picturesque beaches, but Manhattan is an island all the same. As such, water plays a huge role in the city’s geography. Here are some of the most interesting H2O-related facts about the place we call home.

A NATURAL SPRING IN CENTRAL PARK The Great Lawn is one of Central Park’s grandest attractions, but if you head west from it, you’ll find a less heralded, though no less fascinating, feature. Tanner’s Spring appears to be little more than a puddle, but it’s actually an active natural spring. It is named for Dr. Henry S. Tanner, who survived for 40 days in 1880 drinking only water from the spring. Tanner’s incredible feat birthed a legend that the water contained potent nutritional properties, but maybe don’t test that out for yourself. THE EAST RIVER IS NOT A RIVER The East River has a mythical place in New York City history. It’s the favored swimming hole of Kramer and Elaine, as well as the rumored burial place for countless mobsters from the golden age of organized crime. Despite its fame, most people don’t realize that

the East River is not, in fact, a river. Technically, it’s a salt water tidal estuary. That’s why the water flow changes direction on a dime. THE SUBWAY’S AQUATIC WOES The Subway system is one of the city’s many engineering marvels, but it’s not without its faults, as
