MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION CARE SHARE COMMON TECHNIQUES

In November, 2015, ABA Health Services began providing intensive outpatient treatment services to those who suffer from addiction disorders. Clay Sands, Jr., counselor and group specialist, provides counseling for this identied population. Sands has spent most of his career working with “at risk” populations, mostly in the mental health eld, specializing in addictions. Sands has been trained in a number of treatment modalities. One is cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), one of the more widely used approaches to deal with most addictive behaviors. CBT helps the client evaluate his or her thoughts, behaviors and belief systems. Another modality Sands uses is reality therapy – sometimes called choice theory – created by Dr. William Glasser, whom Sands studied directly under in working toward his certication as a counselor. Sands says he feels blessed in having had direct exposure to “some of the greats” in his education as a counselor. He's also grateful to ABA Health Services for giving him the opportunity to continue serving the community where he grew up, the inner city of Baltimore.
