by S a t a n is n o t an irresponsible evil doer roaming around the universe, playing ugly pranks on defenseless people. He is the mighty head of a complex and vicious human and angelic system which is in active enmity against God. Too many of God’s people belittle the devil. He should be respected, feared, resisted in his onslaughts, and avoided whenever possible. Satan has had a well-planned and well-executed pro gram ever since he rebelled and fell like lightning from heaven. That program has been highly successful on earth, ever since he tempted and deceived our first par ents. Through the long centuries he has controlled both individuals and nations, and sent them marching over the world in bloody war. Magnificent cities have risen under his instigation— cities that trafficked in “merchan dise of gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, and fine linen, and purple and silk and scarlet, . . . and wine and souls of men” (Rev. 18:12-13). He has concocted famous, fastidious and fashionable religions which have bound the souls of men to his god less purposes for time and eternity. He has dedicated himself to “ be as God,” and has worked out a system so intricate and deceitful that the majority of earth’s people have followed it. And if there were no power to pre vent it, he would have succeeded long ago. To those who are Bible students and keen observers of world affairs, the final phases of the devil’s long pro cedure are emerging with surprising clarity. He seems to be marshalling his troops for the final battle and it will not be a reconnaissance skirmish, but a fight to the finish. Through the millenniums he has been preparing for William Ward Ayer
it. Three cities, Jerusalem, Babylon and Rome, have at one time or another been his military headquarters. He has operated with enviable success in three areas—the political, the economic and the religious. But Satan has yet to produce the two personalities by whom and through whom he becomes God-like. These are the Beast and the False Prophet who with the dragon (Satan him self) become the unholy trinity that brings God’s wrath and the conquering Christ to earth for its destruction. The Beast and the False Prophet will give the devil two new dimensions for his work. They will operate as men among men and will succeed, filling the void which Satan’s spiritual nature creates. The Beast with the colla boration of the False Prophet will unite the world for the first time since the confusion of tongues at Babel. First, commercial aggrandisement has brought earth’s nations to bloody conflict in every generation, and Satan’s religious head will take care of that. Certainly, the world’s commercial and industrial situ ation is ripe for the Beast’s control. America’s high pro duction costs, high labor and short hours, big profits, are pricing American goods off the world market. 600,000 foreign cars will be sold here this year. Foreign sewing machines, cameras, watches, farm equipment and hun dreds of other articles are causing commercial chaos in our land. American labor costs, not only through wages, but through costly strikes, slow downs and vandalism, to gether with confiscatory taxes are driving American in dustry overseas. “ In the years since World War II, American business (Continued on next page)
