“I WAS LOOKING FOR AN INVESTMENT P U N . . .

"Jesus Loves Me, This I Know" Words by Anna Warner Music by Wm. B. Bradbury The author wrote this song solely for a fictional character to sing, in a novel which she was writing! Her name was Anna Warner, the novel was entitled “ Say and Seal,” and it was published 1859. The book became an astounding best-seller, and the simple children’s poem attained na tional fame. Bradbury’s tune, written in 1861, suited the poem perfectly, and within a few months every Sunday- school scholar in the nation was sing ing “ Jesus loves me, this I know.” Anna B. Warner (1820-1915) and Susan Warner (author of “ Jesus Bids Us Shine” ) were equally-famous both being novelists as well as song-writers. The two sisters lived in New York. Susan (1819-1885) wrote “ The Wide, Wide World,” which gained wider circulation in that day than any other book except “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” ; she taught a Bible class for the cadets at West Point, and is buried there. "Jesus Paid It A ll" Wordis by Elvina Mabel Hall Music by John T. Grape This invitation song had a peculiar and almost unbelievable origin. The author and composer were members of a Methodist church in Baltimore, in 1865. Mrs. Hall brought one of her poems to the pastor (Rev. Schrick) one day, and a short time later Grape, the church organist, brought the pastor a melody he had just composed. Neither the author nor composer had been aware of the other’s efforts. The pastor noticed that the melody and the words fitted perfectly, and thus they have been used ever since! Mrs. Hall had written the words one Sunday morning during the pas tor’s lengthy prayer, while sitting in the choir,— scribbling them on the fly-leaf of the New Lute of Zion!
