D ear Lord, please help me not to put on those summer dresses until Mama says that I may. Why do You let me be tempted to wear them anyway until the weather is warm enough? You know Mama has to start getting them ready a long time before they can be worn because there are so many of us in this family. “Help me to love Mama with all my heart even when she says ‘No’ to me about things I want to do.” By the time this prayer came to an end Mother’s head was swimming. Ardyth had just told the Lord what Mother had been trying to impress on her for several days. Mother has to start weeks before the warm weather to get summer clothing ready. One cannot make a change-over for nine people overnight. The trouble with such a procedure is that small fry are not interested in waiting for temperatures suitable for the clothing. Ardyth came to breakfast one morning with a sheer cotton dress which was sleeveless. The dress was designed for 80 or 90 degree temperatures, but the morning she had donned it, the thermometer regis tered 40. Since this was not the first infraction of rules around here, Mother laid down the law so that it would be the last. There was one facet of the prayer which Mother had to set right. Ardyth had boldly accused God of tempting her to wear the forbidden clothes. Al though the little miss was not aware of any deeper implications, Mother knew that this same attitude is carried over into the lives of Christian adults. The Bible has something to say on this subject. “ Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and en ticed” (James 1:13-14). Learn early, little daughter of mine, that the vic tory which overcomes the world (and that includes all temptations) is our faith. You dare not be weak when strength is at your disposal.
