assistant director of Statistical Re search for the Society follow: “ Lung cancer death rates are ten times higher among those with a his tory of regular cigarette smoking than among those who have smoked. Among two-pack-a-day smokers the rate is more than sixty times higher. “ Those who have given up smoking have a lower risk of death; those once smoking a pack or more a day, who have given up smoking for at least one year, have a death rate less than half of those who have continued smoking. “ Over-all death rates from a num ber of causes — and particularly can cer and coronary heart disease — rise with the number of cigarettes smoked. The death rate is 123 per cent higher in those who smoke two packs of cigarettes a day than in those who do not smoke . . . “ It is estimated than a man who smokes two packs of cigarettes a day has about one chance in ten of de veloping lung cancer, while a non- smoker has only one chance in 270 of having this disease.” ** And, finally, 8. Smoking is an unspiritual habit. I have had young people say to me, “ Show me in the Bible where it says you are not to smoke.” So I turn to Colossians 3:17: “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him” , and First Corinthians 10:31: “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatever y e do, do all to the glory of God.” So far I have had no argument about smoking or any other worldly habit from Christian young people to whom I have shown these verses. The prin ciple applies to all our habits, employ ments and amusements, and the fact that Sir Walter Raleigh had not brought the curse of tobacco to civili zation at the time the Scriptures were written has no bearing upon the mat ter, for plenty of our sins had not been “ invented” then. But God laid down the principles for everything that would ever touch our lives long before we should need them. “ He that followeth Him shall not walk in dark ness but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). We can know whether the habits we form are pleasing to God and surely this is the consideration for the Christian, and He can and will deliv er those tempted and enslaved. •Used by permission of Chicago Daily News , Mr. Sydney Hams, and General Features Syndicate, 250 Park Avenue, New York, N.Y., and National WCTU Pub. MEMORY WORK FOR JUNE The following verses pertain in some way to children, and since June is the month for Children's Day, these Scripture verses will be most appropri ate for memory work. Hidden away in these verses are words beginning with letters which will spell the word "children." C— "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right" (Eph. 6 : 1 ). H— -"Come, ye children. Hearken un to me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord" (Psa. 34:11). I— "And they brought unto him also Infants, that he would them" (Luke 18:15). L— "But Jesus said. Suffer Little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me; for of such is the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 19:14). D— "Take heed that ye Despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven" (Matt. 18:10). R— "And whoso shall Receive one such little child, in my name re- ceiveth me" (Matt. 18:5). E-—"Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right" (Pro. 20:11). N— "Even so it is Not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish" (Matt. 18:14). HOW SHE KNEW “ I know Mary is a Christian, mother,” cried a little girl as she jumped upon her mother’s knees. “How do you know that, dear?” “ Oh! she plays- like a Christian, mother.” The child had noticed the kindness and fairness of her young companion in the games. Yes! being a Christian will affect us in work and in play, at home and at school. If we “ learn of Christ” others are sure to see the difference.
