THE BACKBONE OF OUR PRACTICE:

You’ve likely met our certified and registered dental assistant and clinical team lead, Jennifer Demarco! Over the years, she’s done it all — she’s assisted in procedures, scheduled appointments, helped conduct scans, and helped with more administrative and leadership duties than we could ever count. As we prepare to celebrate Jennifer’s 20th year with the practice next February, I thought sharing some Jennifer trivia would be fun! Jennifer Demarco Is Our Hero

Jennifer Demarco Fun Facts •

Jennifer has been a dental assistant since 1989.

• She started in the dental field when she was only 16 years old. • She got her dental assistant license at the age of 21. • She has worked for three dental practices her entire career, but she’s been with us the longest! • Jennifer is the only team member left from the original practice (everyone else has retired)! • She started working with Dr. Friedman before our practice was called Newman Springs Dental Care. “I never expected to be in this field — I was a high-fear dental patient,” Jennifer tells us. “When I was 16, I was working up front at a dental practice, and on May 26, 1989, none of the staff showed up. They needed someone to assist in the back, so they grabbed me. Before that day, I wasn’t even able to stand in the room while a patient got numbed because it made me sick to my stomach. Since that day, I’ve never left the room. I realized that’s where I’m supposed to be.” After that experience, Jennifer felt the calling to be a dental assistant and has never looked back. Today, she is still excited about dentistry and the many opportunities it presents and advancements that the industry sees. “I’m the oldest of four children in my family, and growing up, my dad always said that I need to learn everything that I possibly can about my field in order to get it right.” Jennifer says. “So I have. I’m experienced and knowledgeable in all fields of dentistry, including oral surgery and orthodontics. I love dentistry and what I do. Most importantly, I love the patients and couldn’t imagine not seeing them every day.”

Jennifer is married with three children — two boys and a girl. Her daughter helps out in the office part time at the front desk. She’s also enrolled at Ryder University and is a singer/songwriter. One of Jennifer’s sons is a salesman for Snapple, and the other runs a maintenance department. For Jennifer, it’s all about family. “We do everything together,” she says. “We travel, visit amusement parks, ride roller coasters, hit the beach, and just hang out. I’m a really proud mom — my kids are amazing and truly make life worth living!” Jennifer, you are the lifeblood of this practice. We could never tell you just how much we all appreciate you! Our patients love you, and we love you. Thanks for all that you do.

SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR FEARS OF THE DENTIST

How to Reduce Dental Anxiety

Welcome distractions. At your appointment, pop in some headphones and listen to music, catch up on a podcast, or watch an episode (or two) of your favorite show. You can read a book, surf the internet, or do some online shopping. Embrace physical and mental exercises. Whether you meditate, do some breathing exercises, or visualize a positive experience, relaxing and preparing your mind and body for the experience can help you to feel more at ease in the dental chair. Don’t let dental anxiety prevent you from receiving the treatment your oral health requires! We have the methods and tools to help ensure you have a calm, relaxed, and smooth appointment, no matter the procedure!

methods you can use to help to ease the anxiety as well? Let’s take a look.

Time it right. You’ll want to arrive early to avoid rushing into the office and hurrying through any paperwork before your appointment, but don’t get there too early either! Allowing roughly 15 minutes before your appointment to find parking, check in, and complete paperwork is recommended. The last thing you want is a long wait before your appointment to fuel your nerves. Communicate your concerns. Before your appointment, let your hygienist and dentist know about your concerns so they can take the necessary steps to make you more comfortable. Don’t hesitate to ask questions — understanding the procedures and tools is half the battle!

Dental anxiety is real. If you fear going to the dentist or just the thought of making an appointment makes you queasy, you aren’t alone. In fact, roughly 36% of people in the U.S. share that same fear, and 12% of people have a very serious fear. Here at Newman Springs Dental Care, we offer sedation to help make treatments easier and more relaxing, but did you know there are also

GOING GREEN FOR SUMMER Sustainable Living Made Simple

While summer is a favorite season for many, it’s also a time when people start slacking in their sustainability efforts. They start using more air conditioning or try other environmentally unfriendly methods. While there are certainly some days when we need the A/C, there are many more we can survive without it. In addition to turning off the air conditioner, there are other things we can do regularly to ensure a sustainable summer. Here are a few practices to incorporate into your life this summer that will be less damaging to the environment than the alternatives. Control your home temperature and lighting. We all know how refreshing it can feel to walk into an air-conditioned home after a hot summer day, but air conditioners use a lot of energy. Instead of relying on the A/C, utilize your fans more often or open your windows after the sun goes down. Don’t leave your air conditioner on if you’re leaving the house for more than a few hours. Also, keep in mind that summer brings more sunlight, which means we can open the curtains and let the sunshine in instead of turning on a few lights. Get your produce from farmers markets. Farmers markets offer a great selection of local produce and other foods. If you’ve never been or don’t go regularly, you should make a habit of going as often as you can. Not only are you supporting

local businesses and farmers, but you’re also helping the environment since you’re buying from vendors that don’t have to travel far to sell their products. Avoid using disposable products. Summer is the best time for picnics, and many will try to use Styrofoam cups and plastic utensils for easy cleanup. However, these items are incredibly harmful to the environment! Rather than buying single-use items, bring Tupperware or other reusable containers, and be sure to clean up after yourself.

Congratulations Graduates!

SUDOKU

Smiling is a crucial component of our health and well-being. In fact, studies show that over 30% of humans smile more than 20 times a day! Here at Newman Springs Dental Care, we never want anyone to be ashamed or embarrassed to show off their pearly whites, and that’s why we offer veneers as a great option to correct imperfections in your smile. The best benefit of veneers, thin pieces of tooth-colored material bonded to the front of your teeth, is that with them, your oral routine doesn’t need to change at all! You’ll still floss once and brush twice a day. Because every smile is different, we offer two types of veneers: porcelain and composite. When compared with composite veneers, porcelain veneers are stronger and more durable, making them less prone to damage, chipping, and cracking. They also have a slightly translucent appearance, just like natural teeth. On the other hand, composite veneers are much quicker to install. Porcelain veneers require at least two visits to the office to be placed. If you opt for porcelain veneers, your first step will be a consultation in which we use Smile Vision, a digital technology, to give you an idea of what your new smile will look like once your treatment is complete. Then we will put together a treatment plan and get started! The process is simple! First, we numb the area, then we remove a small amount of enamel from your natural teeth to ensure a proper fit and to make room for the veneers to adhere properly. Lastly, we bond the veneers in place! If you’re ready to transform your smile or have any questions for our team of experienced professionals, give us a call today! We are ready to help! 732-876-9139. SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT Transform Your Teeth With Dental Veneers

CAN ADULTS HAVE WISDOM TEETH REMOVED? Consider the Potential Consequences

If you’re not one of the rare 2% of people born without wisdom teeth, yours will likely be removed at some point. But we often only hear of teens and young adults having their wisdom teeth removed. Does this mean older adults can’t undergo wisdom tooth extraction? Absolutely not. Anyone, no matter their age, can have these pesky teeth removed. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed by the time they are in their 20s because this is when wisdom teeth usually emerge, and dentists often prefer to remove them before that happens. Yet, some adults don’t see their wisdoms until later. In fact, 90% of people in their 20s have at least one wisdom tooth yet to peek through. It’s perfectly normal for these teeth to appear even into their 30s. You may not have had your wisdom teeth removed yet for numerous reasons. Whether you’re a late bloomer or haven’t experienced any discomfort, here are a few reasons why you should consider having them removed. First, most people are under the impression that, as long as they aren’t hurting you, wisdom teeth can stay. Many individuals can live pain-free with their wisdom teeth, but these teeth can cause problems that aren’t necessarily painful. For example, wisdom teeth can push against your second molars and damage surrounding teeth , leading to expensive dental repair.

Second, a person’s wisdom teeth can lead to frequent sinus infection issues if they become impacted and the roots extend toward the sinus. And third, overcrowding caused by wisdom teeth usually results in a less- than-perfect smile. If you spent years in braces, all your orthodontic work could be reversed. These are just some reasons you should consider having your wisdom teeth removed, even if discomfort isn’t an issue right now. Anyone, regardless of age, can undergo the operation if they’re experiencing wisdom teeth issues, especially if they’re causing you pain. Don’t be afraid to talk with your dentist about having your wisdom teeth extracted.
