CAN ADULTS HAVE WISDOM TEETH REMOVED? Consider the Potential Consequences
If you’re not one of the rare 2% of people born without wisdom teeth, yours will likely be removed at some point. But we often only hear of teens and young adults having their wisdom teeth removed. Does this mean older adults can’t undergo wisdom tooth extraction? Absolutely not. Anyone, no matter their age, can have these pesky teeth removed. Most people have their wisdom teeth removed by the time they are in their 20s because this is when wisdom teeth usually emerge, and dentists often prefer to remove them before that happens. Yet, some adults don’t see their wisdoms until later. In fact, 90% of people in their 20s have at least one wisdom tooth yet to peek through. It’s perfectly normal for these teeth to appear even into their 30s. You may not have had your wisdom teeth removed yet for numerous reasons. Whether you’re a late bloomer or haven’t experienced any discomfort, here are a few reasons why you should consider having them removed. First, most people are under the impression that, as long as they aren’t hurting you, wisdom teeth can stay. Many individuals can live pain-free with their wisdom teeth, but these teeth can cause problems that aren’t necessarily painful. For example, wisdom teeth can push against your second molars and damage surrounding teeth , leading to expensive dental repair.
Second, a person’s wisdom teeth can lead to frequent sinus infection issues if they become impacted and the roots extend toward the sinus. And third, overcrowding caused by wisdom teeth usually results in a less- than-perfect smile. If you spent years in braces, all your orthodontic work could be reversed. These are just some reasons you should consider having your wisdom teeth removed, even if discomfort isn’t an issue right now. Anyone, regardless of age, can undergo the operation if they’re experiencing wisdom teeth issues, especially if they’re causing you pain. Don’t be afraid to talk with your dentist about having your wisdom teeth extracted.
