Academic Academies

Bede’s Academic Academies provide specialised tuition aimed at enhancing students’ academic skills and knowledge. These academies are designed to supplement traditional schooling and offer focused learning opportunities outside of the standard curriculum.

All Bede’s Academic Academies are 3 hours per week (2x1.5 hour sessions) and are available in all weeks. Each Academy will have one instructor per maximum 14 students. For Academic Academies, a minimum English level of B1 (Intermediate) is required apart from Conversation Confidence, which is designed for students of A1-A2 levels.

ESSAY WRITING

Bede’s Essay Writing Academy teaches more than grammar and spelling. Students learn key writing structures for specific genres, and how to organise their ideas as well as the language needed to present and support those ideas in a logical and engaging way. FURTHER INFORMATION This academy is a great opportunity for test-takers who may benefit from the extra writing practice. The skills learnt are directly applicable and help students to think about their audience and appropriate content. This Academy is particularly helpful for students preparing for language exams.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Bede’s International Relations Academy seeks to explain how countries and institutions interact in areas such as politics, economics and security. The Academy appeals to students who are curious about the interconnectedness of a globalised world. MANAGEMENT Bede’s Management Academy offers students an opportunity to understand some of the challenges of being a manager in a business or institution. Students learn the psychology of human behaviour and how to communicate, make decisions, collaborate and adapt. PUBLIC SPEAKING

Bede’s Public Speaking Academy offers students the opportunity to improve their confidence to speak in front of an audience. Through guided preparation, the use of appropriate language and plenty of pronunciation practice, students learn how to convey their ideas effectively. FURTHER INFORMATION This academy is particularly suitable for students taking an English exam who may benefit from extra speaking practice. The skills learnt help them take a step by step approach to best reflect their communicative ability.

Creative Academies

Bede’s Creative Academies are designed to foster the development of artistic and creative skills in students, allowing them to explore and refine their talents in various creative fields. These academies provide specialized training and mentorship to help students build confidence, enhance their creativity, and pursue their artistic interests.

BAKING & DECORATING

Bede’s Baking and Decorating Academy is perfect for students who enjoy getting creative in the kitchen. Students follow simple recipes to make cakes and biscuits and then practise various techniques to decorate them such as buttercream piping, stencilling and making sugar flowers.

FILM & ANIMATION

Bede’s Film & Animation Academy is a fun and interesting way to help young students reach their creative potential by creating a short film using Stop Motion animation techniques. FURTHER INFORMATION Stop Motion animation involves photographing and then physically manipulating objects within the frame to tell a story. Each frame is played in sequence which has the effect of the objects moving. Every student will produce their own short film to show the class.

OBJECTIVES • To learn some of the principles of Stop Motion animation with clay (‘Claymation’) • To use aluminium wire and animation clay to produce a clay model with armature for animating • To learn what features make a clay model good for animating • To produce an animation stage set using an animation theatre, props and backdrops • To learn the fundamentals of how to operate animation software so this can be built on after the academy • To learn how to photograph a stop motion animation so it is smooth and realistic • To learn how sounds enhance animations and how to add sound using a sound library and animation software • To improve understanding of the many uses technology can have today • To produce a short animated sequence with sounds and music • To develop skills in film and animation as well as story-telling and problem-solving.

Bede’s Graphic Design Academy offers students the opportunity to explore the world of visual communication through hands-on projects and expert guidance. Students will learn the fundamentals of design, including typography, layout, colour theory, and digital tools to create stunning graphics. Whether aspiring to work in advertising, media, or digital arts, this academy will help students develop skills that will set them up for success in the design industry.

OBJECTIVES

LEGO & CODING

Bede’s LEGO & Coding Academy offers students an opportunity to combine creative building skills with the power of programming to design interactive and functional LEGO creations. LEGO & Coding is an exciting journey where creativity meets technology. In this Academy, students will build and program LEGO models, bringing them to life with coding. As they explore this dynamic combination, students will expand their language skills, mastering the terminology and language needed to create, code, and communicate in the world of LEGO and technology.

MASTERCHEF Bede’s Masterchef Academy is designed for students who have a passion for food and who enjoy cooking. The classes are fun and informative, giving students the confidence to be hands on with raw produce and kitchen equipment. In each session, students create a dish inspired by a different international cuisine. Kitchen experience is not essential but would be helpful.

OBJECTIVES • To learn both local and international recipes • To encourage creativity and individuality • To develop a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment in cooking original meals • To develop an understanding of basic culinary concepts • To create new dishes by understanding how different flavours combine with one another • To increase vocabulary specifically relating to cooking and dining.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Bede’s Photography Academy offers students the opportunity to develop their photography skills in the picture perfect location, Royal Russell. Students will be guided in shooting images, building composition and getting the best shot. They will then have then the opportunity to expand their editing skills using software under the instruction of an experienced photographer. FURTHER INFORMATION Please note that students are encouraged to bring their own DSLR camera. If you do not have one, please contact us for more information.

OBJECTIVES • To use a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera creatively using the Manual Mode (i.e. not relying on automatic exposure) • To understand the essential functions of a DSLR camera (including ISO, aperture, shutter speed and focusing modes) and how to use these to obtain technically competent, creative photographs • To create attractive, well-composed photographs • To build an exciting image portfolio • To establish a wide repertoire of photographic skills • To expand the capacity for reflection and to develop critical-thinking skills • To increase vocabulary relating specifically to photography.

POTTERY & CERAMICS

Bede’s Pottery & Ceramics Academy offers students the opportunity to indulge in art whilst creating pottery and ceramics to convey their emotions and ideas through unique creations. Pottery and ceramics are art forms that involve shaping clay into beautiful and functional objects. In this creative craft, students will learn to mould, fire, and glaze clay to create intricate pottery pieces. As they explore this fascinating world, they will also enhance their language skills by mastering the terminology and expressions unique to this ancient and expressive art.

Bede’s Sport & Adventure Academies provide students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of sports and outdoor activities, from team sports to extreme adventures. Bede’s Clay Pigeon Shooting Academy is for students who are keen to practise shooting activities. The academy will focus on improving handling of the rifle and technical details to improve accuracy.

Bede’s E-Kart Racing Academy offers students the chance to experience the thrill of electric kart racing while learning the fundamentals of speed, control, and strategy. With expert instructors, students will develop their driving skills, improve their reflexes, and understand the mechanics of racing in a safe and controlled environment. Whether aiming for fun or pursuing competitive racing, this academy provides an exciting introduction to the world of motorsports. FALCONRY EXPERIENCE

Bede’s Falconry Experience Academy offers students the unique opportunity to learn the ancient art of falconry in the stunning historical setting of Herstmonceux Castle. Under the guidance of expert falconers, students will gain hands-on experience with a variety of birds of prey, learning about their care, training, and hunting techniques. This immersive experience connects students with nature while offering them a chance to develop patience, focus, and a deep appreciation for these majestic creatures.

FLYING

Bede’s Flying Academy offers students an opportunity to pilot an aircraft. Students will have a trained pilot in attendance for the 45-minute flight ensuring that they are able to take control of the aircraft should they need to. The main goal of this academy is to help students gain a better understanding of how to pilot an aircraft and can help them with future flying lessons. FURTHER INFORMATION • Students must have perfect vision (glasses or contact lenses are acceptable) and be in good general health • The student’s height and weight is required for the Flying Academy • The student’s English level must be at least Pre-Intermediate (A2) • A member of staff or another student will usually sit in the back of the plane for the duration of the flying lesson • The plane has dual-controls, so the instructor can take control at any time • There is no personal insurance cover for flying lessons • Students will receive a logbook that officially records flying hours; this can go towards gaining a Pilot’s Licence.

Bede’s Golf Academy offers students an opportunity to improve their golf skills. The Academy looks to provide lessons to improve technique and understanding of which shots are effective in certain scenarios.

HORSE RIDING

Bede’s Horse Riding Academy offers students an opportunity to have lessons in Horse Riding and caters for all levels, from those with no experience to Advanced riders. With personalised lessons, professional trainers, and well-trained horses, the Academy looks to improve understanding of skill and correct riding etiquette. FURTHER INFORMATION Students will be given additional tuition, extra to the three hours of riding, in Stable Management (horse care) at the riding stables. The Students height and weight is required for this academy.

OBJECTIVES • To understand and achieve safe position and handling of a pony or horse • To demonstrate control and give effective signals to the pony or horse when mounted • To recognise the importance of balance in walk and trot • To be able to mount, ride and walk in trot independently • To practise the canter transition (if possible) • To experience riding on different terrains • To ride over poles and fences (if possible) • To develop riding skills and build your confidence • To broaden vocabulary relating specifically to horse riding.

Bede’s Indoor Climbing Academy offers students the chance to develop strength, agility, and problem-solving skills through rock climbing in a safe and controlled indoor environment. With expert instructors guiding them, students will learn climbing techniques, safety protocols, and how to conquer challenging routes. Whether for fun or competitive interest, this academy provides a supportive space for young climbers to grow and push their limits.

OBJECTIVES • To teach students the basic techniques of rock climbing, including proper hand and foot placements, body positioning, and climbing strategies • To promote safety and awareness by educating students on climbing gear, safety protocols, and proper belaying techniques • To develop students’ physical strength, flexibility, and endurance through regular climbing sessions and strength-building exercises • To enhance problem-solving and mental focus by encouraging students to tackle various climbing routes and challenges that require concentration and strategy • To foster teamwork and trust by offering opportunities for students to engage in partner-based climbing activities and support one another • To build confidence and resilience by providing a supportive environment where students can set and achieve personal climbing goals • To broaden vocabulary relating specifically to climbing.

Bede’s Tennis Academy offers students the opportunity to improve their tennis technique with and without the racket. There will be sessions that will specifically look at offensive and defensive actions as well as how to position and improve tennis ability.

Bede’s Water Sports Academy offers students the chance to learn and master a variety of exciting water sports. With expert instructors and a focus on safety, students will build confidence, enhance their skills, and enjoy the thrill of water-based activities. Whether for fun or competitive interest, this academy provides a dynamic environment for young athletes to connect with nature and explore the world of water sports. FURTHER INFORMATION Activities may include kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, sailing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and water polo. Water Sports may by offered across lagoon, river or sea based activities.

ZOOKEEPER EXPERIENCE

Bede’s Zookeeper Experience Academy offers students an opportunity to become a zookeeper for a week. Students will help to care for the animals and learn about their natural habitats and behaviour. FURTHER INFORMATION Here are some of the animals which are cared for at Bede’s: Binturongs, Polecats, Rabbits, Kinkajous, African birds, Squirrel Monkeys, Lemurs, Dormice, Chipmunks, Owls.

OBJECTIVES • To stimulate curiosity for the natural world • To increase students’ sense of responsibility towards animals and other living beings • To learn about animal biology, typical animal behaviour traits and conservation • To master the fundamentals of exotic animal management and aquarium management • To acquire hands-on experience handling and looking after animals • To develop awareness of animal welfare issues • To exercise students’ own judgement to assess and control risk relating to animals • To broaden vocabulary relating specifically to animals and animal management.
