Goodbye, With Gratitude A HEARTFELT FAREWELL FROM DR. POUPORE

There comes a time when you have to say goodbye.

me to say hello and chat! Something like that would never happen in a big city. That day, I thought, “It’s so good to be home.” In that instant, I knew there was nowhere else in the country I’d rather live and work. In 2023, I put the office up for sale through a broker specializing in dental practices. Although I received offers from corporate dental companies to buy my practice, I didn’t feel they were right for Malone or the legacy I wanted to leave as a dentist. When many entities of that nature take over a business, they often follow a scorched-earth policy and fire existing staff to cut costs for the bottom line. I’ve never wanted that for my patients or staff, so I kept refusing those offers and waited for the perfect one.

a couple from the east side of New York City. In addition to being experienced dentists, they were looking for a nice place to work while raising their two small children. They sure found the right place! Mindy and I liked them immediately, and our staff took to them instantly. They were the perfect fit I had been hoping to find. All that said, I’m proud to introduce you to Dr. Lew and Dr. Seon of Malone’s newest dental practice: Malone Family Dentistry! The name may be new, but the location’s dedication to providing exceptional care remains. I’m thrilled to say that they will retain our staff! Oh, and one more thing … I still plan to help in the office, so you may see my white-haired self now and then.

If you haven’t noticed, my hair has been totally white for quite a while now. About two years ago, I decided it was nearing the time to wind down my 45 years in dentistry and enjoy retirement with the love of my life, Mindy. That moment has finally come. This will be the final edition of “The Scoop With Dr. Poupore.” Although I’ve known for several months that we’d be sending out this last edition to our readers, it still feels odd saying it. We’ve always loved connecting with our patients through this newsletter, and it seems right to share a few closing words on how I ended up as a dentist in Malone and how much I’ve appreciated every one of you. My roots in Malone run deep. This is where I grew up and learned the value of living in a town where people cared about their neighbors and always looked out for each other. Although I also spent time in Indiana, New York City, and Texas in my early years, nothing compared to the peace and happiness I felt here. That said, my initial career plan was to start my practice in Arizona! That goal was still on my mind when I returned here for a vacation in the early ’80s. While walking around town, at least six people stopped

Welcome to Malone Family Dentistry! A MESSAGE FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS

Hello from Malone Family Dentistry!

is evident in every patient interaction. Beyond the dental chair, he finds joy in spending time with his family and looking forward to snowboarding and learning how to play golf in Malone. A fourth- degree black belt in Taekwondo, Dr. Lew has shared his expertise by teaching martial arts in his hometown of Montreal, Canada. As a proud Canadian, he embraces winter by hitting the mountain slopes with his snowboard.

First, we’d like to thank Dr. Kevin and Mindy Poupore for inviting us to include a message in this newsletter to introduce ourselves to their patients and the Malone community. We’re excited and deeply honored to carry on Dr. Poupore’s tradition of exceptional care, and we look forward to meeting and serving everyone! We are a young family with two small children: Felix, who is less than a year old, and Kayla, who is almost 5. As we share a profession and work in the same business, the support and togetherness we share at home must also be felt in the office and through our experiences with patients. When you live in a big city, it’s rare for people to talk to each other and maintain neighborhood bonds. We were looking for a tight-knit community, and Malone was the perfect place! Although we’ve only lived here for a short time, it already feels like home and family to us. How We Got Here Last September, Dr. Lew traveled to Malone from New York City to meet with Dr. Poupore after learning of the opportunity to purchase his business. He enjoyed the experience so much and had such a great time in town that he soon planned a second trip with Dr. Seon and the kids in tow. From the moment we met with Dr. Poupore, we were struck by his level of dentistry and training and his staff’s expertise and professionalism. Most importantly, everyone there made us feel welcome! It didn’t take us long to decide to move forward with taking over the business — and things moved quickly from there. We officially moved to Malone in early March, and the closing occurred later that month. As we settle in, we’ve grown even more excited and thankful to live in Malone. We’re enjoying our lives in such a close-knit town without the fast pace of city life. Perhaps best of all, being here makes it easier for Dr. Lew to visit his sister, who lives in Montreal.

Are Sugar Substitutes Worth the Tradeoff? KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

The U.S. market for soda is worth over $200 billion, fueled by the average American’s annual consumption of nearly 40 gallons of soft drinks — including diet soda. While staying hydrated is good, sending lots of chemical sweeteners into our digestive tracts may not be. Concern for serious health issues started in the early 1970s when scientists linked cyclamate and saccharine, popular synthetic sweeteners, to cancer. Congress banned cyclamate but wouldn’t ban saccharine. More recent studies determined that obesity is related to many types of cancer, and obese people are more likely to consume lots of diet soda. Similarly, high blood pressure, diabetes, and strokes are more likely due to underlying health issues like excessive weight than consuming artificial sweeteners. In the last decade, more natural sugar alternatives have become available, like stevia, agave, monk fruit, and allulose. Diet soda manufacturers have yet to incorporate these into their soft drinks, but they are experimenting. The Coca-Cola Company uses stevia along with erythritol (another new sugar substitute) in its Vitamin Water Zero.

Artificial sweeteners do provide some benefits, including fewer cavities, lower blood sugar, and less weight gain. However, some people still suffer side effects from drinking diet soda. The sugar alcohols in diet sodas are linked to intestinal distress, and one scientist points to a potential link between laboratory-created sweeteners and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The importance of our stomach’s microbiome is new to science, and all impacts are under intense scrutiny.

Sugar-free beverages may be a better choice than sugar-infused drinks because they don’t cause insulin spikes, but the Mayo Clinic warns that frequent consumption of any type

of sweetened drink can become habit-forming, making it hard to return to drinking plain water, which is the optimal choice for health. As with most food trends, we should be informed, listen to our bodies, and make wise choices about what we drink and eat.

Escape to Paradise: Savoring the Beauty and History of Antigua PAGE 4

Discover the Endless Beaches and Vibrant Culture of Antigua Can you imagine escaping to a tropical island where you can visit a different beach every day for a year without ever seeing the same one twice? It’s not a fantasy. It’s Antigua. JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

Although Antigua covers only 108 square miles, it has a rich history and cultural traditions. Nelson’s Dockyard National Park offers archaeological sites and more than 12 miles of hiking trails. The 8th of March Project commemorates the lives of enslaved and free Africans who labored on the docks for centuries. Energetic hikers can make their way up a steep trail to Shirley Heights, 492 feet above sea level, to enjoy a panoramic view across the sea. Among Antigua’s unique attractions is the centuries-old artisan craft of forming tamarind seeds into jewelry and home decor. The island is also home to one of the rarest fruits in the world, the Antigua black pineapple, which is sweet and delicious sliced fresh or in jelly form. Also, a weekly archaeological tour called “Rum in the Ruins” offers a history of the sugar trade and the island’s famous rum.

Antigua has long been known for its 365 beaches, from Halfmoon Bay’s silvery sands to Galley Bay Beach’s surfing waves. Unique for its history and native crafts, this eastern Caribbean island is rich in recreational and cultural attractions, as well as natural beauty. Christopher Columbus encountered Antigua in 1493, and the British subsequently colonized the island and neighboring Barbuda in the 1600s. Barbuda was originally planned as a slave-breeding colony, but the enslaved people brought to the island rebelled against colonial rule. After years of domination by the United Kingdom, Antigua and Barbuda achieved independence as a single nation in 1981.

Antigua’s Summer Carnival is one of the most popular in the world. The celebration began when people took to the streets in 1834 to celebrate the emancipation of enslaved people and independence from England. Visitors to the Carnival today can enjoy wildly colorful costumes and 10 days of music, dancing, and parades. Among the most memorable experiences are steel band competitions playing calypso and soca music.
