Counter Intelligence Issue 01

Just graduating beauty school a year ago and apprenticing at Art+Autonomy Salon in Soho means I’ve had to be a jack of all trades while I learn my craft. A key focus for me is creating my personal brand by doing good work, connecting with clients, and building my professional digital footprint. Here’s what I learned about content, Instagram, and building a personal brand during my first year. Professional vs personal:

Find “mentors”: Look for people on Instagram that have a decent number of followers and see what they’re doing. What’s working for them might work for you too! Use the tools: Use everything Instagram has to offer. Use tags and hashtags — they’re there for a reason! Like and comment on relevant posts. Research: Finally, do your research! Instagram is constantly launching new functions, so you need to keep up. You also need to stay on top of what’s trending in your industry. Stick with it: To build a following you need to post every day. Sometimes it’s hard to think of things worth posting, but basically anything can be content; it’s all about how you present it. Just start posting — it becomes easier and easier with each post! Just Ask: Follow me @oceanm_hair and I’ll return the love! ✹

Yes, you need to have separate accounts. A client or employer doesn’t want to see what you did last weekend. Building your brand: Things you need to consider: Who are you? What’s your story? What makes you different? What’s your why? Why do you do what you do? The layout: Your Instagram should have a heading with your name, location, and who/what you are, e.g., mine is Hairstylist at Art+Autonomy. What you are: Are you all business, business/lifestyle, blogger/influencer? It’s important to decide so you make the right first impression. Have a plan: This brings us to what type of content you want to create. Posts shouldn’t just show your work but also highlight your personality. Create a style: Make conscious decisions about cropping images, colors, fonts, and filters. Creating a brand requires consistency and reinforcing your style.
