That was among the chief findings of a new polling conducted by the Manufacturing Leadership Council, the NAM’s digital transformation division. The annual Transforma- tive Technologies in Manufacturing research survey aims to reveal data on current realities and expecta- tions for manufacturing in the near future and in the years to come. That figure is up from 51 percent just one year ago. Why disruptive technology? Re- ducing costs and improving opera- tional efficiency were the most-cit- ed reasons for investing in digital tech, with 83 percent of respon- dents identifying these as import- ant motivations. American River Packaging, which would become Package One, was established in Northern Califor- nia; the company specialized in corrugated packag- ing for industrial markets Icon Displays, producing wood crates for wine and permanent displays for retail, is established in 1987. St. Worth Container was established in 1994, fo- cusing on flexographic printing and corrugated packaging. Capital Corrugated was established in 1995, spe- cializing in flexo and single-face litho corrugated, as well as folding cartons. CalSheets in Northern California was established in 1998. The following year GoldenCorr was estab- lished in Southern California. Both companies spe- cialize in manufacturing corrugated sheets. Impact Manufacturing and Berry Pack were also established in 1998. Impact specializes in thermo- forming and rigid cartons and also opens a loca- tion in Dongguan, China. Berry Pack services fruit growers in Central California with corrugated pack- aging and plastic clamshells. Progressive Packaging Group, established in 2000, specializes in providing packaging for the agricul- tural markets of Central California.

“Through this journey, we’ve worked very hard to maintain the local, family feel at all of our loca- tions,” said Craig Reese, Golden West CEO. The company has provided packaging solutions to the wine, agricultural, and consumer products markets for seven decades, supplying corrugated boxes, folding cartons, rigid cartons, molded pulp, and other custom solutions. Golden West can trace its origins to the founding of Fibre Containers in 1952, the first Golden West legacy business to be established. Throughout the 1950s, while initially selling cor- rugated and folding cartons through distribution, Fleet-Fibre would eventually build a 250,000-square- foot manufacturing facility, which currently serves as the headquarters for Golden West Packaging Group in City of Industry, California. AllPak Container, specializing in corrugated for the agricultural markets in Pacific Northwest, was established in 1962 in Washington state. Packaging Innovators and Heritage, the next com- panies that would comprise Golden West’s portfolio, are established in Northern California in the mid- 1970s, both of which specialize in high-graphics corrugated packaging for wine, food and industrial markets.

Dow Commits To Circular Ecosystem

Dow Inc. will accelerate the sustainability targets the company set in 2020 by expanding its Stop the Waste target to a Transform the Waste target. By 2030, Dow will transform plastic waste and other forms of alternative feedstock to commercial- ize 3 million metric tons of circular and renewable solutions annually. To do this, Dow will expand its efforts to stop the waste by building industrial ecosystems to collect, reuse or recycle waste and expand its portfolio to meet rapidly growing demand. Maintaining Expectations It is expected that the waste required to produce 3 million metric tons of circular and renewable solutions per year by 2030 will surpass and replace Dow’s original 1 million metric ton goal. Several recently announced circular and mechan- ical offtake agreements and projects will help con- tribute to achieving the target, including: • Agreements with Mura Technology to construct multiple world-scale advanced recycling facilities in the U.S. and Europe, collectively adding as much as 600KT of annual capacity; • An investment to build the largest single hybrid recycling site in France, managed by Valoregen, which will secure a source of post-consumer resins (PCR) for Dow; • A collaboration with Nexus Circular to create a circular ecosystem in Dallas, Texas, for previously non-recycled plastic building on its previous Hefty EnergyBag collaboration with Nexus and Reynolds Consumer Products; • Mechanical recycling collaboration with Boo- mera LAR in Brazil; • An investment in Mr. Green Africa and an agreement to co-develop more traceable, fair, and high-quality PCR that can be used in the production of new flexible plastic packaging; and • A memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lucro Plastecycle to develop and launch polyeth- ylene (PE) film solutions using PCR plastics in India. FINAT Concerned About Negative Packaging List FINAT has expressed its concern on the plans of the European Commission to include a negative list of packaging characteristics as part of their revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive. In a statement shared with the services of the Commission taking part in the ongoing Inter-Ser- vice Consultation, FINAT pointed out that the list as presented in the draft legal text that appeared in the press is not based on the most up-to-date de- velopments on packaging materials and recycling. A negative list would work against further devel- opment of recycling technologies, and furthermore the foreseen process for its implementation would fail to provide regulatory certainty to the industry, which is one of the goals of the revision. Alternatively, FINAT proposes to emphasize the definition of criteria for Design for Recycling in a technology agnostic manner and involve a multi-stakeholder Expert Group in the development of Design for Recycling guidelines for the specific packaging materials. To read FINAT’s statement, visit: https://www. finat.com/documents/965/position-paper-fi- nat-feedback-on-ppwr-october-2022.pdf . Miraclon has announced a global price increase of 5 percent on all consumables, effective November 1st, 2022. The unprecedented inflation of the costs of raw material, utilities and labor, finance charges and business services felt by the industry globally have necessitated the increase to alleviate these rapidly increasing costs also experienced by Miraclon. “Securing supply for our customers and continu- ing development of innovative technology that can help them meet the demands of their clients while countering price pressures remain our top priorities,” commented Chris Payne, Miraclon CEO. “Unfortunately, price increases to alleviate rapidly increasing procurement and energy costs are be- coming a routine part of business for most compa- nies, with no sign of relief in the foreseeable future. We are doing everything we can to drive internal efficiencies that mitigate the effects on our custom- ers and are working with them to help pass these unavoidable increases on through the value chain.” For more information visit https://www.mira- clon.com/security-of-supply/ . Harper Awarded Bellissima DMS Accreditation International prepress software company Hamill- road Software has announced that Harper Corpo- ration of America has achieved accreditation of its anilox products for use with Bellissima Digitally Modulated Screening (DMS). The Bellissima DMS accreditation process took place over many weeks at Clemson University in South Carolina. Printers and converters worldwide can benefit from this accreditation by combining Harper’s an- ilox with Bellissima to see improvements in work- flow and quality. The Bellissima accreditation is a three-phase guided process using a wide range of screen and surface pattern testing, culminating in a “customer quality test” to ensure samples meet the required commercial standards. The process is rigorous and requires technical ex- pertise and commitment from each partner. Only Bellissima qualified plates can be used, and the comprehensive test includes a range of anilox and press combinations with Bellissima, using a variety of substrates on both narrow web and wide web presses. TLMI At the association’s recent Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, Kathy Alaimo, Co-CEO of New York-based Syracuse Label & Surround Printing was named TLMI Converter or the Year.

The Converter of the Year Award honors and recognizes a member of the North American package print- ing industry who has made an ex- tensive contribution to the greater marketplace and who has addition- ally demonstrated an unwavering commitment to TLMI.

Kathy Alaimo

Alaimo served a term on the TLMI Board of Di- rectors and has also been a member of the TLMI Technical Committee, serving as the committee’s co-chair for years. During her time on the Technical Committee, Alai- mo was additionally a co-chair of the TLMI Techni- cal Conference, rebranded in recent years as print- THINK. During her tenure as CEO of Syracuse Label, Alai- mo guided the company’s transition to becoming an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) organi- zation. A business entity that is rare in the printed packaging industry, an ESOP gives employees own- ership interest in the company. A Culture Of Wellbeing As a leader, Alaimo is a fierce proponent of a com- pany culture that prioritizes the wellbeing and em- powering of its employees and with so few ESOPs in the industry, she knew she would have to find critical resources elsewhere to ensure employees realized the transition was in their best interest. Drawing upon her formal education as a journalist, Alaimo immersed herself in learning best practices from the Oakland, California-based National Center for Employee Ownership. Today, Syracuse label is an award-winning com- pany that is lauded throughout the industry for its flourishing organizational culture that attracts and retains top talent. Recently, Alaimo guided her company through another significant transition. In June, Syracuse Label & Surround Printing, Macaran Printed Prod- ucts, and W.N. Van Alstine announced their plans to merge. The merger brings together 165,000 square feet of manufacturing space, $65 million in annual sales and 175 employee-owners.
