With guidance from the teacher, students self-select and read novels at an individualized level and pace in conjunction with full-class readings. Students have regular conferences with the teacher to help monitor progress and comprehension, and they analyze and respond to their literature selections through writing. Full-class readings provide students with a solid foundation for understanding mythology and legends and for making connections to the school’s core values of respect, integrity, empathy, community, and excellence. Important skills and concepts for the course are taught via mini-lessons. Students participate in daily writing workouts where they write several pieces including examples of flash fiction, poetry, and expository and compare/contrast paragraphs.
