More Math One Trimester (Offered First, Second, and Third Trimester) Prerequisites: Seventh or Eighth Grade Student This elective is designed for any student who wants an extra math challenge or an opportunity to practice their mathematical thinking skills through real-world challenges. Students will engage with math topics that exist within national standards for grades 5-8. Conceptual understanding, application, and adaptive reasoning of these topics will be explored using real-world scenarios, models, games, and simulations. Throughout the course, students will connect their study to the concepts that are currently being taught in the math classes to organically support the math curriculum. This is a project based class that applies mathematical concepts to the goals of each project. Examples of projects include: participation in the stock market game, entrepreneurial “Shark Tank” style challenges, and exposure to national and international math competitions.

Fundamentals of Math 8 Full Year (Three Trimesters) Prerequisites: Math 7 or equivalent AND recommendation of Student Support Services This course is designed to hone the foundational skills needed to be successful in algebra. Topics include fractions, decimals, percents, integers, exponents, proportions, equations, inequalities, and functions. Additionally, the Standards for Mathematical Practices (making sense of problems and persevering in solving them, reasoning abstractly and quantitatively, constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others, modeling with mathematics, using appropriate tools strategically, attending to precision, looking for and making use of structure, and looking for and expressing regularity in repeated reasoning) are woven into the activities and assessments throughout the course. Designed to have a low student to teacher ratio, this course is focused on making arithmetic and algebraic concepts approachable and accessible for students who are building their foundational math skills.
