Eighth Grade Upper School French 1 Pathway University Liggett School is committed to placing all students in the modern language course appropriate to their skills and experience. Eighth graders will be provided an opportunity to replace their study of either Chinese or Spanish with introductory French, with the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Modern Languages Department and school administrators. They will be enrolled in the Upper School’s French 1 course for their eighth-grade year. This course will provide Middle School credit and appear on the Middle School transcript. This course will not count towards the graduation requirement for modern language in Upper School. Students who elect to enroll in Upper School courses must possess the studentship skills necessary to be successful in an Upper School course. Students new to University Liggett School in the eighth grade may elect to begin their language study in French per the pathway above or be assessed by the Modern Languages Department for placement in the appropriate Middle or Upper School Chinese or Spanish course.

Physical Education

The comprehensive Middle School physical education program provides students in sixth through eighth grades with the opportunity to refine their physical skills, develop a lifelong love of activity, and gain essential knowledge for overall well-being. Physical education is an integral part of the ULS Approach to education. The curriculum emphasizes skill development across various activities and sports, fostering a lifelong love of physical fitness and teamwork. We create a safe and enjoyable environment where students can build confidence, character, and personal growth.

French 1 Full Year (Three Trimesters) Prerequisites: Recommendation by committee

Physical Education 6 Full Year (Three Trimesters) Prerequisites: Enrollment as a sixth grade student

Physical Education 7/8 Full Year (Three Trimesters) Prerequisites: Enrollment as a seventh or eighth grade student Building upon the foundation established in Lower School physical education, students will continue to develop their proficiency in a variety of team and individual sports. Team sports include: flag football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse, baseball, ice skating, kickball, pickleball and floor hockey. Individual sports include badminton, track and field and tennis. Students will delve further into game strategies and tactics to enhance their performance and understanding of the games they play. In addition, regular fitness activities continue to be incorporated into the program to promote cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance. Students will also participate in a complementary health education class focusing on crucial topics relevant to Middle School students, including: sleep habits and the importance of sleep, nutrition and healthy eating choices, life skills development, puberty and body changes, and healthy decision making. Students will receive a ULS physical education uniform from the school Logo Store. Lockers are provided for secure storage of belongings.

This course introduces French as a second language for non-native speakers through speaking, listening, culture, reading, writing and grammar. In this proficiency-based course, the target language will be used more than 80% of the time. The vocabulary studied will be relevant to communicating while in a Francophone country with main units focusing on identity, school life, family life, cuisine, free time and city life. Students study the culture of French speaking countries through cultural realia, interactive videos, cultural comparisons and communication with correspondents in French-speaking countries. Students are assessed in all four areas of proficiency through formative and cumulative activities, such as creating and discussing a family and friend tree or making a video about the school and what goes on where in the building. Each student will also have a speaking portfolio where recordings and videos are stored for self-reflection and progress checks.
