French 1 Full Year (Two Semesters) Prerequisites: None

cultural realia, interactive videos, cultural comparisons and communication with correspondents in French- speaking countries. Short readings will include articles and newspapers—all chosen to help students understand the culture of Francophone countries. Students are assessed in all four areas of proficiency through formative and cumulative activities, such as making a video-invitation to a traditional Francophone meal or filling out an application for a volunteering position in Francophone culture. Each student will have a speaking portfolio where recordings and videos are stored for self-reflection and progress checks. There is an expanded emphasis on listening and reading comprehension and correct pronunciation at this level. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to communicate in the present, past and future and be able to comprehend French in many contexts. Texts: Entrecultures 1 and Entrecultures 2 French 3 Full Year (Two Semesters) Prerequisites: French I or 2 or equivalent AND Modern Languages Department recommendation This course continues the study of French as a second language for non-native students through speaking, listening, culture, reading, writing and grammar activities. This course is designed for those students who are ready to learn French at an intermediate level. This course teaches students the grammar and vocabulary to communicate adequately in many situations in French-speaking countries with main units focusing on city and town life, healthy living habits and how people in Francophone cultures maintain their physical as well as social and emotional health, and traveling in Francophone countries. Students are expected to understand and speak French in the class at all times. Students are expected to be comfortable writing in French at a basic level and will work to develop greater fluency in writing. This course introduces French as a second language for non-native speakers through speaking, listening, culture, reading, writing and grammar. In this proficiency-based course, the target language will be used more than 80% of the time. The vocabulary studied will be relevant to communicating while in a Francophone country with main units focusing on identity, school life, family life, cuisine, free time and city life. Students study the culture of French speaking countries through cultural realia, interactive videos, cultural comparisons and communication with correspondents in French-speaking countries. Students are assessed in all four areas of proficiency through formative and cumulative activities, such as creating and discussing a family and friend tree or making a video about the school and what goes on where in the building. Each student will also have a speaking portfolio where recordings and videos are stored for self-reflection and progress checks. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to speak in the present and future in various relevant settings.
