CEO's Message October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I am proud to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Real Men Wear Pink Campaign. Throughout the month, NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx raised funds for the American Cancer Society and provided education and resources to raise awareness to mitigate this dreadful disease. Thank you to each of you who participated in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Your dedication to healthcare is recognized and valued. Join me in congratulating the Women's Health team for Upholding the Highest Standards of Infant Feeding Care and receiving the prestigious Baby-Friendly® re-designation. Also, I am proud to announce that NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx facility has been awarded over $254,888.00 for 2023 to expand access to abortion services. The monies were included in New York Governor Kathy Hochul's second round of awardees from the Abortion Provider Support Fund, building on the commitment to ensure safe abortion access and family planning services for all New Yorkers. Lastly, I want to acknowledge the great work of our Nursing team at NCB as they navigate their journey on ANCC Pathway to Excellence® Program. This is a fantastic endeavor. We are extremely proud to be recognized for the hard work of our team members throughout the Baby-Friendly® process. NCB is committed to providing the support, education and resources moms need to successfully initiate breastfeeding and continue breastfeeding when they leave our care.”
NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx is proud to announce that we have achieved the highly prestigious international Baby-Friendly® designation after a rigorous review process conducted by Baby-Friendly® USA, the organization responsible for bestowing this certification in the United States. This distinguished honor demonstrates that NCB is adhering to the highest standards of care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. The positive health effects of breastfeeding are well-documented and widely recognized by health authorities worldwide. For example, the Surgeon General’s 2011 Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding stated that “Breast milk is uniquely suited to the human infant’s nutritional needs and is a live substance with unparalleled immunological and anti-inflammatory properties that protect against a host of illnesses and diseases for both mothers and children.” NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx joins a growing list of more than 20,000 Baby- Friendly® hospitals and birth centers throughout the world, [insert current number listed on BFUSA’s homepage] of which are in the United States. Governor Kathy Hochul today announced $13.4 million awarded in the second round of the Abortion Provider Support Fund to 37 providers, covering 64 clinical sites to further expand access to abortion services in New York. The second round of funding builds on the Governor's commitment to ensure safe abortion access for all New Yorkers by expanded eligibility to include family planning providers that were not awarded funding during phase one, other licensed healthcare providers, and independent clinics. "New York State is committed to protecting reproductive rights, and as other states wage a war on abortion access we will continue to be a safe harbor," Governor Hochul said. "To ensure access to reproductive health care, we must provide the resources and support providers need. I will not stand by and allow women to be subjected to government- mandated pregnancies."

BREAST CANCER Awareness Month
NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx | October 2022
Let's talk about PINK OCTOBER BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH If you put off getting a mammogram during the pandemic, here’s why it’s time to schedule one. Are you overdue for a mammogram? Getting this breast cancer screening every year helps your doctor spot signs of cancer long before you may notice any changes in your breasts. Like many people in the U.S., you may have put off your usual check-ups and screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, you may be one of the 382,000 women who missed breast cancer screenings between March 2020 to March 2021. But even though the virus hasn’t quite gone away, it is safe to get a mammogram once again—and it’s important to do so. If it’s been a while since you had a mammogram, these 6 reasons just may convince you to pick up the phone and make an appointment: You may have breast cancer even if you haven’t felt a lump. You may not be able to feel a lump if it’s small or deep inside your breast. Luckily, mammograms can show lumps and other changes in the breasts that can be caused by cancer before they’re otherwise felt. The screenings use low dose X-rays that give doctors a look at the inside of your breasts. The sooner cancer is caught, the better. Your chance of surviving breast cancer is much better if the cancer is found early. The five-year survival rate is 99% if the cancer is found before it spreads outside the breast, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. If found early, your doctor may only need to remove the lump instead of the entire breast. You may be more likely to get breast cancer if family members had it. Your chance of getting breast cancer could be higher if someone else in your family had the cancer. If your mother, daughter or sister had breast cancer, your risk could be nearly double. Keep in mind, however, that you can also get breast cancer even if no one in your family has ever had it. The older you are, the higher your risk of breast cancer. You can get breast cancer at any age, but it’s more likely to happen as you get older. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that most breast cancers happen in women over 50. The American Cancer Society® suggests starting yearly breast cancer screenings between ages 40 to 44. Besides age and family history, there are other things that may increase your risk. According to the CDC, factors that may raise your risk of breast cancer are dense breasts, having breast cancer in the past, radiation treatment of the chest or breasts, starting your period before age 12 or starting menopause after age 55. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors. Mammograms are quick and easy. Getting a mammogram usually takes only 30 minutes or less. Most places that provide screenings offer a choice of appointment times so you can select a time that’s most convenient for you. You might be able to get a screening during your lunch hour, before or after work, or on the weekend.

Let's join together in stopping the killer before it starts.
NYC Health + Hospitals/ North Central Bronx has raised just under 3000 dollars for cancer research. The funds was raised from donations and sales in the lead-up to the team NCB HOPE’s participation in the Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 23rd. The walk was among several activities the leading Bronx hospital was involved with as part of the hospital’s commitment to cancer awareness. Funds to support the work of the American Cancer Society were also generated through sales of various items, raffles, and bingo games. Employees are encouraged to support planned fund-raising activities, which will continue until the end of the year. A group photograph of staff wearing pink was taken on Friday, October 21st, to shore-up NCB’s support for the fight against cancer. The CDC has reported that breast cancer alone has claimed the lives of about 42,000 women and 500 men in the U.S. each year. NCB offers Breast Services geared at preventing, caring for, and managing breast disease while providing regular imaging through mammography and ultrasound. A message to employees in this edition of the NCB Magazine from Christopher Mastromano, CEO, praised team NCB’s participation in cancer awareness. “An impressive stand out in October was our collaboration and support for Breast Cancer Awareness,” CEO Mastromano said. “As team captain, I am extremely impressed because team NCB showed up.” NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx | October 2022

PRACTICE SELF-CARE – 7 WAYS TO DO IT
Escape from reality: Give yourself a break from your usual routine by visiting a museum, scheduling an afternoon at a spa, reading a book, taking a nap or playing a video game. Make a date: One-on-one time with your spouse or partner is crucial for a healthy relationship. Getting out of the house for a few hours is ideal, but there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy an at- home date night after the kids are asleep. Find time for friendships: Friends make life more rewarding and offer much-needed support and companionship. Regular get-togethers, whether they’re in-person or virtual, can provide laughs, a shoulder to lean on or a way to feel connected to life outside your family. Educate yourself: It’s never too late to master a new language, learn how to paint or take up snowboarding. Find something you’ve always wanted to do and then give yourself the time to learn how to do it – or do it better. Get moving: Exercise is an excellent way to reduce stress and improve your health. Walking, biking and running are inexpensive forms of exercise that help reduce stress. These activities will also give you some alone time to recharge and regroup. Improve your diet: Prepared foods and packaged snacks will satisfy your hunger pangs, but these foods can make you feel sluggish. Swap convenience foods and sugary or salty snacks for foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean meats for more staying power. Take care of your health: Women often make their family’s healthcare needs a priority while neglecting their own health. In fact, 78% of women surveyed by Healthy Women and Working Mother magazine reported putting off healthcare appointments because they were too busy managing their family’s needs. Making (and keeping) well-visits, dental, vision, therapy and other healthcare appointments is essential for maintaining your physical and mental health. Feeling overwhelmed or stressed? That’s a sign that you need some “me” time. Self-care doesn’t require hours, although the more time you can devote to it, the better. In fact, all you need is a few minutes per day to relax and recharge. Find time each day for any of the things on this list:
