Christmas Traditions

As the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder, Americans begin to busy themselves with preparations for the holiday season. Cars drive by with trees strapped to the roofs and neighbors hang lights around their porches. The hustle and bustle are all part of winter holidays that are celebrated around the world. But many Americans and Canadians might not recognize the celebrations and traditions that are practiced in other regions of the world. European countries have long histories of celebrating religious, winter holidays and Christmas is chief among them. Many of the Christmas traditions that are practiced in Europe are local to individual countries, regions, or linguistic communities but together they compose the quilt of our collective celebration.
