The Flavors of . . . A Christmas Tradition, making Limoncello

Shelley brooks Sample

Traditions fascinate me; I often wonder how they began and what keeps them going? Sugar Mice are a traditional candy popular in the United Kingdom, especially at Christmas time. It is a known fact that candy sugar Mice were playthings for Hemingway’s cats and treasures stuffed into the toes of Christmas stockings, a tradition that he would continue to enjoy his entire life. Some of you have read my story in Global Chic Lifestyles, “Averey’s Adventures in Venice.” Averey time-traveled to Venice, where she was introduced to the tradition familiar to many, Bellini’s, a champagne with Prosecco and Peach juice at Harry’s Bar. I, too, had my first Bellini in that legendary bar frequented by one of my favorite writers, Ernest Hemingway. Common American traditions of Christmas are tree trimming, decorating cookies, caroling, gift-giving, watching Christmas movies, Elf on the shelf, hanging stockings on the fireplace mantle, photos with Santa, sending Christmas cards, and let’s not forget the Eggnog. But what about Christmas traditions that aren’t as common? Those specific to friends and families who joyfully carry them out year after year. This year seems to have stirred an intense yearning to bring back those traditions that Covid stole from us. Mine is making Limoncello, a smooth, deceptively strong, golden-colored Italian lemon liquor.
